After five years leading Rutgers University, President Jonathan Holloway announced his decision to step down from his position, effective June 30, 2024. His departure marks the end of a transformative era for the state’s flagship university.

Holloway, a renowned historian and scholar, arrived at Rutgers in 2019, bringing with him a vision for increased diversity and inclusion. His tenure was marked by significant achievements, including record-breaking enrollment numbers, a strategic investment in research and innovation, and a renewed focus on student success.

Under Holloway’s leadership, Rutgers launched the “Scarlet & Black: A University for the Future” strategic plan, which aimed to solidify the university’s position as a global leader in research and education. This plan included initiatives like the development of new academic programs, the expansion of research facilities, and a commitment to strengthening partnerships with industry and government.

Holloway’s departure is a loss for the Rutgers community, but his legacy will continue to shape the university’s future. His commitment to academic excellence, diversity, and social justice has left an indelible mark on the institution.

As the search for a new president begins, the Rutgers community will undoubtedly look to the future with a sense of anticipation and optimism, building upon the strong foundation laid by President Holloway. While details regarding his future plans remain unclear, his impact on Rutgers University will undoubtedly be felt for years to come.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
