1. Word Association: Give students a word and ask them to write down the first word that comes to mind. Discuss their answers and encourage them to explain their reasoning.

2. Picture Prompts: Show students an interesting picture and ask them to write a short story or descriptive paragraph based on the image.

3. Quote Reflections: Share a thought-provoking quote related to literature or language and have students write a response reflecting on its meaning or relevance.

4. Vocabulary Builder: Introduce a new vocabulary word each day and have students write a sentence using the word correctly. Encourage them to get creative with their sentences.

5. Current Events Discussion: Provide a news article or headline related to literacy or education and prompt students to discuss their thoughts and opinions on the topic.

6. Grammar Riddles: Present a grammar riddle or puzzle that challenges students to identify grammatical errors or find the correct way to construct a sentence.

7. Literary Analysis: Give students a short excerpt from a literary work and ask them to analyze the author’s use of language, symbolism, or character development.

8. Word Scramble: Jumble the letters of a vocabulary word and have students unscramble them to find the correct word. This activity reinforces spelling and word recognition skills.

9. Book Recommendations: Have students share a brief summary and recommendation of a book they recently read. This promotes reading engagement and allows students to discover new books.

10. Quick Writes: Provide a thought-provoking question or writing prompt and ask students to write a brief response. This encourages critical thinking and improves writing skills.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
