Managing emotions is an essential skill for children to learn as they grow and develop. The Zones of Regulation is a framework that helps children identify and understand their emotions, as well as provide strategies for regulating them. Here are 18 activities to support kids in managing their emotions effectively:

1. Feelings Charades: Encourage children to act out different emotions while others guess which emotion they are portraying. This activity helps children practice recognizing and expressing emotions.

2. Emotion Art: Provide art supplies and ask children to create artwork that represents different emotions. This activity allows them to explore and express their feelings creatively.

3. Emotional Check-In: Start each day with a check-in where children identify and share their current emotional state. This practice helps foster self-awareness and emotional regulation.

4. Mindfulness Exercises: Teach children mindfulness techniques such as deep breathing, body scans, or guided visualization. These practices can help calm the mind and reduce stress.

5. Emotion Walk: Take children on a nature walk and encourage them to identify and discuss the emotions they experience during the activity. This helps children connect their emotions to their environment.

6. Emotion Sorting: Provide a variety of pictures or cards representing different emotions and ask children to sort them into different categories. This activity promotes emotional vocabulary and recognition.

7. Feelings Journal: Have children keep a journal where they can write or draw about their emotions throughout the day. This activity encourages self-reflection and emotional expression.

8. Emotion Memory Game: Create a memory matching game using cards with different emotions. Children can practice matching emotions and discussing how they feel when experiencing them.

9. Emotional Storytelling: Read books or tell stories that highlight different emotions. Afterwards, discuss the emotions depicted in the story and how characters manage them.

10. Breathing Buddies: Provide children with a stuffed animal or soft toy and guide them through deep breathing exercises while holding their breathing buddy. This activity promotes relaxation and emotional regulation.

11. Feelings Thermometer: Create a visual representation of a thermometer with different emotions labeled at different levels. As children identify their emotions, they can place a marker on the thermometer to indicate their intensity.

12. Emotion Cards: Create cards with different emotions written on them, and ask children to identify and discuss times when they have experienced those emotions. This encourages self-reflection and emotional awareness.

13. Emotion Regulation Board Game: Design a board game where players advance by discussing different strategies for regulating emotions. This activity allows children to practice and reinforce their emotion regulation skills.

14. Calming Jars: Assist children in creating calming jars filled with glitter or other materials. When feeling overwhelmed, children can shake the jar and watch the glitter slowly settle, promoting relaxation.

15. Emotional Music Exploration: Play a variety of songs with different emotional tones and discuss how each song makes children feel. This activity helps children understand the connection between music and emotions.

16. Emotion Theater: Encourage children to create and perform short skits or role plays that demonstrate different emotions and strategies for managing them. This activity promotes empathy and problem-solving skills.

17. Positive Affirmations: Have children create and repeat positive affirmations related to emotional well-being. This practice helps build self-esteem and a positive mindset.

18. Emotion Wheel: Provide a wheel with different emotions listed, and ask children to spin it and discuss different strategies for managing the selected emotion. This activity encourages brainstorming and problem-solving.

These activities are just a starting point for supporting children’s emotional development. Remember, consistency, patience, and open communication are key to helping kids effectively manage their emotions and thrive emotionally.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
