Stop Taking Teacher Planning Periods: Improve Education

Dear School Administrators,

I am writing to address a growing concern among educators regarding the practice of taking away teacher planning periods. As an experienced teacher myself, I strongly urge you to reconsider this decision for the betterment of both teachers and students.

Teacher planning periods are crucial for effective lesson planning, grading, and collaboration with colleagues. These designated periods allow us to reflect on our teaching practices, develop innovative lesson plans, and provide timely feedback to our students. By taking away these valuable planning periods, you inadvertently diminish the quality of education provided to students and place unnecessary burdens on teachers.

When teachers have sufficient planning time, they are able to create engaging and tailored lessons that cater to the diverse needs of their students. This includes researching current educational trends, developing creative activities, and incorporating real-world examples into their teaching. Without planning periods, teachers are left with limited time to adequately prepare for their classes, resulting in rushed lesson plans and a less effective learning experience for students.

Moreover, taking away planning periods also hinders teacher collaboration. During these designated periods, teachers have the opportunity to meet with their colleagues, exchange ideas, and seek advice. This collaboration fosters a sense of unity among the teaching staff and promotes professional growth. Without planning periods, teachers are isolated and unable to benefit from the collective expertise of their peers.

Furthermore, the elimination of planning periods disregards the significant workload that teachers already carry. Teachers are responsible for lesson planning, grading assessments, attending staff meetings, and addressing parental concerns, among many other tasks. Removing their planning periods adds additional pressure and exacerbates the burnout that many educators already face.

I understand that school administrators are under immense pressure to meet various demands, including budget constraints and curriculum standards. However, I urge you to recognize the importance of teacher planning periods in supporting the overall quality of education. By ensuring that teachers have dedicated time for planning and collaboration, you contribute to a positive work environment and ultimately enhance the learning experience for students.

In conclusion, I implore school administrators to reconsider the practice of taking away teacher planning periods. These periods are vital for teachers to prepare engaging lessons, foster collaboration, and ultimately provide the best possible education for students. Your support in this matter will be greatly appreciated by educators and students alike.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
