Card games are a fantastic way to engage students in learning and make math more enjoyable. Not only do they help develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, but they also improve mental math abilities. Here are 20 card games that will turn your students into math aces:

1. Addition War: Players take turns flipping two cards and adding up the numbers. The player with the highest sum wins the round.

2. Multiplication Go Fish: Similar to traditional Go Fish, players ask for a specific card and must correctly multiply the numbers on the cards to keep them.

3. Place Value Snap: Players take turns flipping cards and saying the place value of the underlined digit. The first player to correctly identify the value wins the round.

4. Subtraction Speed: Players race to find the difference between two cards drawn from the deck.

5. Fractions Memory: Cards with fraction values are placed facedown, and players try to match equivalent fractions.

6. Number Sense Slapjack: Players slap the deck when two cards with the same numerical value appear consecutively.

7. Decimal War: Similar to Addition War, players add up decimal numbers on the cards.

8. Patterns in Poker: Players use card sets to create number patterns and identify the rule that governs them.

9. Probability Poker: Students calculate the probability of drawing certain cards in poker and make strategic decisions.

10. Rounding Rummy: Players create sets or runs of cards with rounded numbers to the nearest ten or hundred.

11. Geometry Go Fish: Cards have different shapes and attributes. Players ask for specific properties to make sets.

12. Division War: Players divide the numbers on their cards and compare quotients to determine the winner.

13. Algebraic Equations Solitaire: Players solve algebraic equations created using card values.

14. Perimeter Pairs: Cards display different shapes, and players match cards with equivalent perimeters.

15. Estimation War: Players estimate the sum or difference between two cards and compare their predictions.

16. Probability War: Players calculate the probability of drawing certain cards and compare values.

17. Measurement Memory: Cards display various units of measurement, and players match them with their equivalent values.

18. Prime or Composite Snap: Players quickly determine if a number is prime or composite based on their cards.

19. Symmetry Solitaire: Players create symmetrical designs using the shapes and features on the cards.

20. Money Madness: Cards represent different amounts of money, and players must accurately count and compare values.

These card games provide students with hands-on practice, reinforce math concepts, and foster a friendly competitive spirit. By incorporating them into your lessons, you can transform math anxiety into excitement and help your students become math aces in no time!

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
