1. Experiment with Glitter Handwashing:

– Sprinkle some glitter onto your child’s hands.

– Ask them to wash their hands with soap and water.

– Observe how the glitter spreads and sticks to their hands.

– Explain that the glitter represents germs and how proper handwashing can remove them.

2. Make and Use DIY Hand Sanitizer:

– Teach kids how to make their own hand sanitizer using aloe vera gel, rubbing alcohol, and essential oils (optional).

– Guide them to measure the ingredients and mix them together.

– Explain how to use it properly and emphasize the importance of hand hygiene.

3. Explore Germ Hotspots:

– Show your child common “germ hotspots” in the house, such as doorknobs, light switches, and faucets.

– Use a UV light or glow-in-the-dark marker to make these spots visible.

– Ask them to clean these areas and explain why it is necessary to keep them germ-free.

4. Demonstrate the Sneezing or Coughing Technique:

– Teach kids to cover their mouths and noses with their elbows when sneezing or coughing.

– Explain that this helps prevent spreading germs to others.

5. Conduct a Germ-Transfer Experiment:

– Use slices of bread or petri dishes to demonstrate how germs transfer through touch.

– Touch one slice with clean hands, another with unwashed hands, and another after using hand sanitizer.

– Observe and compare the amount of mold or bacterial growth on each slice.

6. Play “Guess the Germs”:

– Show pictures of different types of germs or bacteria.

– Discuss their names, shapes, and where they are commonly found.

– Quiz the kids by showing them a picture and asking them to identify it.

7. Create Germ-Fighting Art:

– Provide art supplies and ask the kids to draw or paint a picture representing germs being defeated.

– Encourage them to be creative and show their understanding of germ prevention.

8. Invent a Handwashing Song:

– Together with your child, create a fun song or rhyme about the importance of handwashing and fighting germs.

– Practice singing it while washing hands to make it a memorable routine.

Remember to adapt these activities based on your child’s age and development level. Have fun while teaching them important lessons about germs and hygiene!

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
