Congratulations! If you represent a college or university that is included in this list, please collect your seal below.

Deciding which college to attend can be a daunting task. For many, it will be the most important decision that they make in their lives. To make an informed decision, you have to consider a lot of variables, such as cost of attendance, financial aid, student/teacher ratio, academics, student life, and more. These factors will either positively or negatively impact the quality of education that you receive.

Do you want to acquire a master’s degree in coaching, but don’t know what institution you should attend? Well, if you are as ambitious as I was in my late teens, then you want to attend a top school, instead of an average or mediocre one. Fortunately, we have already done the legwork for you. To help you find the right school for your interests and goals, we’ve compiled a list of 2022’s best master’s in coaching programs.

What institution did we forget? Leave your thoughts in the comment section below.

  1. Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI

The College of Education Department of Kinesiology has an in-depth master of science (MS) concentration in coaching. Michigan State has some of the best online programs for learners who do not wish to attend classes on campus. This master’s degree is intended for future sports and athletic directors and coaches. It takes a scientific approach to coaching, allowing learners to finish their studies in an accelerated format requiring less than two years of studies.

This degree program is incredibly real-life, giving learners the real-world experiences necessary to succeed in any position. Internships are a core component of the degree program. Each learner is required to get professional experience at local schools, institutions, and organizations (including involvement in the on-campus Summer Coaches’ School). Each learner is also required to take a certifying exam for additional cachet in job-seeking and will work alongside skilled peers to foster a sense of collaboration that is key for any budding coach.

  1. University of Missouri, Columbia, MO

The University of Missouri has a master’s degree in positive coaching that is one of the finest in the country. It stresses key principles, such as counseling psychology and positive philosophy, which enable learners to grow individually and professionally. This highly flexible degree program comprises 30 credit hours of study and can be finished in various formats. Learners may take classes in 16-, 8-, or 4-week formats, allowing for exceptional convenience. This degree program is one of the most reasonably priced, offering a low-cost education that is at the cutting-edge of all coaching degrees.

  1. West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV

The online masters of science in sports coaching at West Virginia University is offered via the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences. This degree program is perfect for individuals who want to become coaches at schools or private organizations. Ranked as a doctoral university with highest research activity, this program applies a holistic approach to the topic of coaching. It offers a comprehensive look at all physical, mental, and strategic aspects of coaching and athletic performance. This degree program requires 36 credit hours of study, all of which can be finished online and in just under two years. It is intended for teachers and coaches who are currently working and is one of the most adaptable of its kind.

This degree program is reasonably priced, offering the same tuition rates for online learners and on-campus learners. The degree program can be finished in less than two years and is incredibly real-life, giving learners the chance to finish several internships and externships. Also, the school has an active alumni body, helping learners before and after graduation to find jobs, internships, externships, and other professional connections.

  1. Ohio University, Athens, OH

Ohio University has degrees focused on career skills, and the master of coaching education is no exception. The degree program is customized to meet the real-world demands of the job market and accommodate working adults, along with recent college graduates. The institution features an array of graduate assistantships and other financial aid chances to help make studies reasonably priced. This degree program is small, taught by just 15 highly trained professors who are experts in their respective fields. For individuals looking for additional licensures, the institution also has an optional degree in soccer coaching.

Ohio University has one of the top online coaching programs in the country designed around the National Association for Sport and Physical Education’s “Eight Domains of Coaching.” The degree program is adapted to an array of sports and coaching concepts and can be finished by coaches working full-time. This institution was named a 2015 Best College by The Princeton Review, receiving accolades for its high-quality academics, available classwork (available 24/7), and professional development opportunities.

  1. Bellevue University, Bellevue, NE

Bellevue is a private—reasonably priced—institution that has an array of distance education programs for nonconventional learners. The masters of science degree in leadership and coaching is perfect for individuals in any field—not just athletics. It leads to a certificate of completion in executive coaching, along with a formal graduate degree. This degree program integrates several distinct methods to prepare learners for real-life experiences. Several certificates are delivered upon completion of classwork, including the Certificate of Completion in Executive Coaching and the Certificate of the International Coach Federation, helping to boost learners’ resumes and overall experiences. This degree program is one of the most forward-thinking of its kind, providing its learners with extensive career services to help them through every aspect of searching for jobs. Learners have access to tutoring services, writing centers, and test centers, along with resume writing and job search workshops.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
