1. Number Hunt: Create a scavenger hunt where kids have to find numbers around the house or outdoors. They can add up the numbers they find to see who can reach a target sum first.

2. Dice Games: Play simple dice games like “Roll and Add” or “Addition War”. Each player takes turns rolling dice and adding the numbers together. The player with the highest sum wins the round.

3. Flash Card Challenge: Use addition flashcards to challenge kids to solve equations quickly. Increase the difficulty by using larger numbers or adding multiple-digit numbers.

4. Math Maze: Create a maze where kids have to solve addition problems to find the correct path. Each correct answer leads them closer to the exit.

5. Fact Family Houses: Draw houses on paper and write three numbers on each house. Challenge kids to find the related addition and subtraction facts for each set of numbers.

6. Number Line Hopscotch: Draw a number line on the ground and play hopscotch, but instead of the traditional version, kids have to add or subtract the numbers they land on.

7. Math Art: Incorporate art into addition by having kids create colorful addition illustrations. For example, they can draw a picture and label different parts with addition equations.

8. Roll and Build: Roll two dice and add the numbers together. Then, challenge kids to build a tower using that many blocks. Continue rolling and building until the tower becomes too unstable.

9. Bean Bag Toss: Set up a target with numbered sections. Kids can throw bean bags onto the target and add up the numbers they land on. The highest sum wins.

10. Math Story Time: Read math-related storybooks that involve addition. After reading, discuss the addition problems within the story and have kids solve them.

11. Addition War: Play a card game similar to “War”, but instead of comparing numbers, kids add the values of their cards. The player with the highest sum wins the round.

12. Number Bingo: Create Bingo cards with addition equations instead of numbers. Call out addition problems, and kids have to find the matching equation on their card.

13. Measure and Add: Provide measuring tools like rulers, measuring tapes, or scales. Kids can measure objects and add up the measurements to practice addition.

14. Math Scavenger Hunt: Create a scavenger hunt where kids have to solve addition problems to find hidden clues or objects around the house. Each correct answer leads them to the next clue.

15. Grocery Store Math: Take kids to the grocery store and give them a budget. They can add up the prices of different items to see if they stay within their budget.

16. Sticky Note Equations: Write various addition equations on sticky notes and hide them around the house. Kids can find the equations and solve them.

17. Speed Math Competition: Time kids as they solve a set number of addition problems. The fastest time wins. Increase the difficulty by adding more complex equations.

18. Pattern Puzzles: Create pattern puzzles where kids have to determine the missing number in a sequence of addition equations. This helps reinforce addition patterns.

19. Digital Math Games: Use interactive online math games or apps that focus on addition. Many educational websites offer free addition games for kids of all ages.

20. Math Relay Race: Divide kids into teams. Each team member solves an addition problem before passing the baton to the next team member. The team that completes the race first wins.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
