Winter is the perfect time to explore the wonders of science. From the changing weather to the unique properties of ice, there are plenty of opportunities for exciting experiments and activities. Here are 18 of the coolest winter science experiments and activities to try:

1. Snowflake Observation: Explore the beauty of snowflakes by observing and documenting their unique shapes and patterns.

2. Melting Snowman: Build a snowman and observe how it melts over time. Discuss the concept of melting and the role of temperature.

3. Ice Sculptures: Use water, food coloring, and different size containers to create beautiful ice sculptures. Discuss how the freezing process works.

4. Snow Density: Collect different samples of snow and measure their density. Discuss the factors that affect snow density, such as temperature and moisture content.

5. Snowball Science: Investigate the properties of snowballs by experimenting with different snow textures and shapes.

6. Frost Formation: Observe how frost forms on surfaces overnight. Discuss the process of condensation and freezing.

7. Snowflake Crystal Growing: Create your own snowflake crystals using borax and hot water. Observe the growing process and examine the crystal structures.

8. Salt and Ice: Explore the effect of salt on ice by sprinkling salt on an ice cube and observing how it melts.

9. Hot Chocolate Science: Experiment with different variables, such as milk temperature and amount of cocoa, to create the perfect cup of hot chocolate.

10. Winter Bird Feeding: Set up a bird feeder and observe the different bird species that visit. Discuss their feeding habits and adaptations to the cold weather.

11. Frozen Bubbles: Blow bubbles outside and observe how they freeze and shatter. Discuss the science behind bubble formation and freezing.

12. Snow Exploration: Go on a winter nature walk and observe the different types of snow and ice formations.

13. Ice Skating Science: Discuss the concept of friction and experiment with different ice surfaces to understand why ice skating is possible.

14. Snowflake Art: Create beautiful snowflake art using various materials like paper, glue, and glitter. Discuss the symmetry and complexity of snowflake patterns.

15. Winter Weather Forecasting: Learn about weather prediction by tracking temperature, humidity, and other weather variables during the winter season.

16. Polar Bear Blubber: Investigate how blubber keeps polar bears warm by conducting a hands-on experiment using shortening, water, and gloves.

17. Snow Volcano: Create a volcano using snow and baking soda-vinegar mixture. Observe the eruption process and discuss the chemical reactions involved.

18. Winter Sports Physics: Explore the principles of physics involved in winter sports like skiing, snowboarding, and ice hockey.

These winter science experiments and activities are not only educational but also tons of fun. So get ready to bundle up and dive into the wonders of science this winter season!

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
