Teaching children how to tell time can be a challenging task, but with the right activities, it can also be fun and engaging. By incorporating these 13 activities into your lesson plans, you can help children master the skill of telling time in a creative and interactive way.

1. Clock Art: Have children create their own clocks using art supplies. Encourage them to label the hours and minutes and practice setting the time on their clocks.

2. Time Bingo: Create a bingo game with different times displayed on the cards. Call out random times and have children cover the corresponding clock on their bingo cards.

3. Time Puzzles: Provide children with puzzle pieces that represent different times. They have to assemble the puzzle by putting the pieces in the correct order.

4. Digital vs. Analog: Teach children the difference between digital and analog clocks. Show them examples of both and explain how to read the time on each type of clock.

5. Scavenger Hunt: Hide various analog clocks around the classroom or outdoor area. Give children a list of clues to help them find the clocks and determine the time displayed on each one.

6. Time Memory Game: Create a memory game with pairs of cards. On one card, write the time, and on the other card, draw a clock displaying the corresponding time. Children have to match the time with the correct clock.

7. Freeze Time: Play a game of freeze dance, but instead of freezing when the music stops, children have to freeze and display the time on a pretend clock. The last child to display the correct time is out.

8. Time Twister: Have children create their own twister game board but instead of colors, use different times. Call out a specific time, and children have to place their hands and feet on the corresponding time on the mat.

9. Time Capsule: Have children create a time capsule of significant events in their lives. They have to document the time and date of each event, helping them understand the importance of time in our lives.

10. Time Storytelling: Have children write and illustrate their own stories that involve time. Encourage them to use specific times throughout the story and explain the significance of those times.

11. Clock Races: Create a relay race where children have to run to a designated area and set a time on a clock before running back and passing the clock to the next person. The team with the fastest and most accurate times wins.

12. Time Hopscotch: Draw a hopscotch grid with different times written in each square. Children have to hop through the grid, calling out the time on the square they land on.

13. Time Cooking: Teach children how to read the time on recipes and have them participate in cooking activities where they have to follow specific cooking times. This helps them practice reading analog and digital clocks accurately.

By incorporating these activities into your teaching, children will develop a solid understanding of telling time while having fun. Remember to adjust the difficulty level based on their age and skill level, and most importantly, encourage them to practice regularly.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
