12 Simple and Fun Preschool Science Experiments and Activities
1. Sink or float: Fill a tub with water and gather various everyday objects like a feather, a rock, a toy car, and a plastic bottle. Ask the children to predict whether each object will sink or float, then test their hypotheses.
2. Rainbow milk: Pour a small amount of milk into a shallow dish. Add drops of different colored food coloring, making sure to spread them out. Dip a cotton swab in dish soap and touch it to the colored milk, observing the swirling colors.
3. Planting seeds: Provide each child with a small pot, soil, and a few seeds. Let them plant the seeds and observe their growth over time. Discuss the importance of water, sunlight, and nutrients for plants to grow.
4. Baking soda volcano: Create a small volcano using paper mache or a plastic bottle cut in half. Place the volcano on a tray or in a large container. Mix baking soda and vinegar in a separate cup and pour it into the volcano to create a foaming eruption.
5. Lemon battery: Insert copper and zinc nails into opposite sides of a lemon. Attach alligator clips to the nails and connect them to an LED light or a small electronic device. Observe the lemon producing electricity.
6. Sensory bottles: Fill empty water bottles with different materials such as water and glitter, colored oil and water, or rice and small objects. Seal the bottles tightly and let the children shake them to explore the different sensory experiences.
7. Frozen salt painting: Mix equal parts salt and watercolor paint. Using a paintbrush, paint various designs or pictures on a piece of paper. Place the artwork in the freezer and observe how the salt crystals form unique patterns as the paint freezes.
8. Magnetic fishing: Attach paperclips or small magnets to toy fish and place them in a sensory bin filled with water. Provide the children with magnetic fishing rods and encourage them to catch the fish using the magnets.
9. Balloon rocket: Tie a long string between two chairs or objects. Thread a straw onto a piece of string and attach it tightly to the string. Blow up a balloon and tape it to the straw. Release the balloon and watch it zoom along the string like a rocket.
10. Oobleck exploration: Mix cornstarch and water in a large container to create a gooey substance called oobleck. Let the children experiment with its unique properties, observing how it behaves as both a solid and a liquid.
11. Shadow tracing: Place various objects on a piece of paper and shine a flashlight on them. Encourage the children to trace the shadows of the objects using crayons or markers. Discuss how shadows are formed and how they change with the angle of light.
12. Exploring magnets: Provide a variety of magnets and different objects that are attracted or repelled by magnets. Let the children explore the properties of magnets and experiment with different materials to see their magnetic effects.
These science experiments and activities will engage preschoolers in hands-on learning and foster their curiosity about the world around them. Enjoy the fun and educational journey of exploring science together!
