Advisory or homeroom periods are a great opportunity to focus on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) skills. These skills are crucial for students’ personal and academic growth. By incorporating fun and engaging activities into these periods, educators can help students improve their SEL skills while enjoying the process. Here are 12 fun ways to build SEL skills during advisory or homeroom:

1. Morning Check-In:

Start the day by asking students to share their current feelings in a morning check-in circle. This allows them to express their emotions and builds empathy as they listen to their peers.

2. Gratitude Journals:

Encourage students to keep gratitude journals to promote positivity and appreciation. Students can jot down three things they are grateful for each day, fostering a sense of gratitude and resilience.

3. Team-Building Games:

Engage students in team-building games that promote cooperation, communication, and problem-solving. Activities like escape rooms or building challenges can strengthen relationships and build SEL skills.

4. Mindful Breathing:

Teach students simple breathing exercises to help them calm their minds and regulate their emotions. Incorporate mindfulness activities to increase self-awareness and boost focus.

5. SEL Book Club:

Start an SEL-themed book club where students can read and discuss books that explore emotions, relationships, and personal growth. This encourages empathy and understanding.

6. Random Acts of Kindness:

Encourage students to perform random acts of kindness and share their experiences. This cultivates empathy, compassion, and a sense of community.

7. Conflict Resolution:

Teach students effective conflict resolution strategies, such as active listening and compromise. Provide scenarios for students to practice these skills during advisory or homeroom.

8. SEL Circle Time:

Dedicate time for students to sit in a circle and have open discussions about various SEL topics. This creates a safe space for students to share their thoughts and feelings.

9. Reflection Journals:

Have students maintain reflection journals where they write about their daily experiences and reflect on their emotions. This promotes self-reflection and self-understanding.

10. SEL Videos and Discussions:

Share engaging videos that focus on SEL themes and facilitate class discussions afterward. This encourages critical thinking and the development of empathy.

11. Mindfulness Coloring:

Provide coloring sheets with positive affirmations or inspiring quotes. Students can color while practicing mindfulness, which promotes relaxation and stress reduction.

12. Community Service Projects:

Organize community service projects where students can actively contribute to their community. This fosters empathy, citizenship, and social responsibility.

Incorporating these fun and interactive activities into advisory or homeroom periods can have a lasting impact on students’ SEL skills. By creating an environment that supports emotional well-being and personal growth, educators can help students thrive academically and socially.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
