1. Organize a virtual meet and greet: Plan a virtual meeting where students can introduce themselves, share their interests, and interact with their classmates. This will help create a sense of community and familiarity even in a remote setting.

2. Virtual classroom setup: Create a welcoming and engaging virtual classroom environment. Decorate the background, display colorful visuals, and incorporate interactive tools to keep students motivated and excited about learning.

3. Welcome video from the teacher: Record a personalized video message to welcome students back to school. Include encouraging words, important information about the upcoming school year, and express excitement about their return. This can help establish a positive connection between the teacher and students.

4. Virtual scavenger hunt: Organize a virtual scavenger hunt where students have to find specific items or complete tasks related to the school or their learning environment. This will encourage engagement and active participation while fostering a sense of adventure.

5. Virtual field trips: Take students on virtual field trips to museums, exhibitions, or important landmarks. This can be done through pre-recorded videos, interactive virtual tours, or live-streamed experiences. It will provide students with opportunities for exploration and learning beyond the traditional classroom.

6. Online icebreaker activities: Start the school year with fun icebreaker activities to help students get to know each other. This can be done through online quizzes, virtual games, or collaborative projects. Encourage students to share their interests, hobbies, and goals for the upcoming year.

7. Virtual student council election: Conduct a virtual election for the student council. Provide information about the candidates, their qualities, and their proposed plans. Students can vote online and become actively involved in shaping their school community.

8. Online discussion forums: Set up online discussion forums where students can engage in meaningful conversations about school topics, current events, or subjects they are passionate about. This will encourage critical thinking, communication skills, and peer-to-peer learning.

9. Virtual parent-teacher conferences: Organize virtual parent-teacher conferences to discuss students’ progress, goals, and any concerns. This will maintain open lines of communication between teachers and parents, ensuring students’ academic success and well-being.

10. Celebrate achievements virtually: Acknowledge students’ accomplishments through virtual celebrations. This can include virtual award ceremonies, shout-outs during online classes, or sharing success stories on social media platforms. Recognizing and appreciating their efforts will motivate students to continue working hard.

Remember, creating a welcoming and inclusive virtual learning environment is essential for supporting students’ academic and social-emotional growth. Implementing these ideas will help foster a positive school experience, even in a virtual setting.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
