  • Performance Needs: Depending on your course of study, you may need a laptop capable of handling demanding applications. For example, graphic design students might require more powerful processors and better graphics capabilities.
  • Portability: If you’re frequently on the move, a lightweight laptop with a long battery life will be essential. Look for models under 1.5 kg if you plan to carry it around campus.

  • Repairability and Upgradability: Consider how easy it is to repair or upgrade the laptop. Some models allow for RAM or storage upgrades, which can extend the lifespan of the device.

Expert Perspectives: What Educators Recommend

Educators often suggest that students consider their specific academic needs when selecting a laptop. For instance, a university professor specializing in computer science emphasizes the importance of processing power and memory for coding and software development tasks. Many recommend laptops with at least 16 GB of RAM for students in tech-heavy fields.

On the other hand, a lecturer in arts and design might suggest laptops with high-resolution displays and touch functionality for students engaged in graphic design or digital art. The ability to accurately render colors and allow for creative input via a stylus can significantly enhance the learning process.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
