This new admissions system changes how students get into college — and helps schools find prospects

The traditional college admissions process, heavily reliant on GPAs and standardized test scores, is undergoing a transformation. A new wave of admissions systems is emerging, shifting the focus beyond academic metrics to encompass a broader range of student attributes and potential.

This paradigm shift recognizes that academic success is not the sole indicator of a student’s future potential. Instead, it emphasizes a holistic approach that considers students’ talents, passions, and experiences. Schools are implementing innovative methods such as portfolio reviews, personal essays, and interviews to gain a more comprehensive understanding of each applicant.

The new system aims to address the limitations of the old, which often favored students from privileged backgrounds with access to extensive resources. By broadening the criteria, colleges can better identify and recruit diverse talent pools, fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment.

This evolution is particularly beneficial for students who may not excel in traditional academic settings but possess unique strengths and passions. Students with strong artistic talents, entrepreneurial drive, or community leadership experience can now showcase their abilities, demonstrating their potential for success beyond academic performance.

The shift towards a more comprehensive admissions system is a positive development. It empowers colleges to identify well-rounded students, fostering a richer campus experience and preparing students for a future that values creativity, adaptability, and a diverse range of skills. While challenges remain in ensuring fair and transparent processes, this new approach promises a brighter future for college admissions, one that is more equitable and reflective of the complexities of the modern student.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
