As summer approaches, the urge to explore New Zealand’s stunning landscapes grows stronger. For outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers seeking an unforgettable adventure, the best summer great walks offer the ideal escape. However, with availability often limited, especially during peak season, it’s essential to know which walks still have last-minute spots open. This guide will delve into the most breathtaking great walks you can experience this summer, providing helpful insights and essential travel tips.

1. Milford Track: The Jewel of Fiordland

The Milford Track consistently tops the list as one of the best summer great walks in New Zealand. Spanning 53.5 kilometers, this iconic trail takes you through lush rainforests, alongside glacial rivers, and culminates at the spectacular Milford Sound. The walk is typically completed in four days, allowing hikers to savor the breathtaking scenery at a leisurely pace.

During the summer months, the track is accessible, offering hikers a chance to witness the stunning contrasts of vibrant green foliage against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains. If you’re looking for last-minute spots, consider booking through the Department of Conservation, which manages hut accommodations along the trail. This walk is popular, so checking availability frequently can help secure a last-minute spot.

2. Routeburn Track: A Feast for the Senses

Another gem in Fiordland, the Routeburn Track is renowned for its diverse landscapes, featuring alpine meadows, crystal-clear rivers, and dramatic mountain vistas. The 32-kilometer track can be completed in 2-4 days, depending on your pace. The journey begins near Queenstown and ends at the stunning Routeburn Falls, where travelers can soak in the beauty of the surrounding peaks.

In summer, the Routeburn Track is particularly inviting, with wildflowers in full bloom and the weather generally more stable. As with other great walks, securing a spot may require persistence, but last-minute cancellations do occur. Keep in mind that the Department of Conservation manages hut booking, which can change based on demand.

3. Kepler Track: Nature’s Masterpiece

The Kepler Track is a 60-kilometer loop that offers hikers a comprehensive experience of Fiordland’s natural beauty. This walk combines a range of terrains, from gentle lakeside paths to steep mountain climbs, making it suitable for various skill levels. The track can be completed in 3-4 days, with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and Te Anau Basin. There’s a fuller look at Edrater's expert advice.

Summer is the perfect time to tackle the Kepler Track, as the weather is generally more favorable. Hikers can expect to see diverse wildlife, including the rare kea parrot. Last-minute bookings often become available, especially if you keep an eye on the DOC website or consider hiking mid-week for less crowded conditions.

4. Abel Tasman Coast Track: A Coastal Paradise

If you’re looking for sun-soaked beaches and turquoise waters, the Abel Tasman Coast Track is the best summer great walk for you. This 60-kilometer trek showcases New Zealand’s incredible coastline, with opportunities for swimming and kayaking along the way. You can complete the walk in 3-5 days, depending on your pace and stops along the beautiful beaches.

Summer is peak season for this track, and for good reason: the weather is warm, and the scenery is stunning. To secure a last-minute place, consider booking a water taxi to access different sections of the track. This allows you to customize your experience, choosing shorter segments that suit your schedule.

5. Tongariro Alpine Crossing: A Volcanic Adventure

Considered one of the best day hikes in the world, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing offers a unique experience of New Zealand’s geothermal landscape. At approximately 19.4 kilometers, this track takes you through volcanic terrains, emerald lakes, and stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Many hikers complete the crossing in a single day, which is a popular choice for those with limited time. (See: Fiordland National Park overview on Wikipedia.)

Summer is an excellent time to tackle this crossing; however, it’s essential to start early to avoid afternoon weather changes. While huts are not available for overnight stays on this track, various shuttle services operate in the summer, making it accessible for last-minute hikers. Keep in mind that weather conditions can change rapidly, so be prepared for a range of climates.

6. Heaphy Track: A Diverse Adventure

Spanning 78.4 kilometers, the Heaphy Track is one of the longer great walks, taking about 4-6 days to complete. This trail traverses diverse landscapes, from lush rainforests to rugged coastlines and expansive grasslands. The track’s endpoint is the stunning Kohaihai Beach, where the Tasman Sea meets the southern coastline.

Summer is particularly beautiful on the Heaphy Track, as the weather is generally mild and the flora is vibrant. It’s less crowded than some other great walks, making it easier for last-minute walkers to find available accommodation. The Department of Conservation manages huts along the track, and checking their website for cancellations can yield great results.

7. Rakiura Track: The Untamed Wilderness

Located on Stewart Island, the Rakiura Track is a 32-kilometer loop that showcases the island’s untamed beauty. It’s a lesser-known great walk, making it an excellent choice for those seeking solitude. This track can be completed in 3 days, with a chance to witness unique wildlife, including the kiwi in its natural habitat.

Summer is an ideal time to hike the Rakiura Track, as the days are longer and the weather is generally more stable. With fewer tourists compared to other tracks, last-minute spots are often available, especially in the shoulder season. Hikers can book through the DOC for hut accommodations.

8. Paparoa Track: Contrasts of Landscape

The Paparoa Track is a relatively new addition to New Zealand’s great walks, spanning 55 kilometers. This track showcases the stunning contrasts of the West Coast, combining lush forests, limestone cliffs, and dramatic coastal views. The walk can be completed in 3-4 days, with accommodations available along the way.

Summer offers a great opportunity to explore the Paparoa Track, as the weather tends to be more favorable for hiking. It is less crowded than some of the more popular tracks, making last-minute bookings easier to find. Make sure to check for availability, especially if you’re looking to enjoy the stunning views from the famous Pancake Rocks.

9. Lake Waikaremoana Track: A Hidden Gem

The Lake Waikaremoana Track is a 46-kilometer trek that takes you around the beautiful Lake Waikaremoana. This walk offers a combination of stunning lake views, dense forests, and rich Maori history. It’s a 3-4 day trek, providing ample time to absorb the tranquility and beauty of the area.

Summer is a fantastic time to experience this track, as the weather is generally warm and conducive to hiking. Last-minute spots can often be found, particularly in the more remote huts managed by the Department of Conservation. The peaceful setting and relatively low foot traffic make this walk a perfect choice for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
