Teachers Are Making Flat Versions of Themselves for Kids to Take on Adventures

Teachers are finding creative ways to engage their students during remote learning by making flat versions of themselves. These paper cutouts, typically made from photographs, allow teachers to accompany their students on various adventures while they remain physically separated.

The concept of making flat versions of teachers originated from the children’s book “Flat Stanley” by Jeff Brown. In the story, Stanley Lambchop is flattened by a bulletin board and embarks on a series of exciting adventures. Inspired by this idea, teachers have started creating their own flat versions to foster a deeper connection with their students.

To create a flat version of themselves, teachers take a full-body photograph and print it out on cardstock or other sturdy paper. They then cut out the image, making sure to include details like facial features, clothing, and accessories to make the cutout resemble themselves as closely as possible.

Once the flat teacher is prepared, they can be sent home with students or mailed to their respective addresses. Students can then take their flat teacher on adventures and document their experiences through photos or drawings. This activity not only allows students to have a virtual presence of their teacher but also encourages imaginative play and enhances their storytelling skills.

Teachers may provide a set of guidelines or themes for students to follow while adventuring with the flat teacher. For example, students can take their flat teacher to historical landmarks, national parks, or even places as simple as their own backyard. They can document their explorations through photographs, diaries, or even collaborate with their classmates to create a shared adventure journal.

Teachers who have implemented this idea have reported positive feedback from both students and parents. The presence of the flat teacher provides a sense of comfort and familiarity, even in a remote learning environment. It also strengthens the bond between teacher and student and fosters a supportive classroom community.

In addition to its impact on students, the creation of flat teachers allows educators to maintain a connection with their students outside of virtual classrooms. It provides them with an opportunity to participate in their students’ lives and be a part of their personal growth and development, despite the physical separation.

Teachers are truly going above and beyond to ensure that the remote learning experience is engaging and personalized for their students. By making flat versions of themselves, they are bringing a piece of the classroom into their students’ lives and creating lasting memories along the way.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
