Atlanta, Georgia – Spelman College, a historically Black college for women, has announced a significant expansion of its global reach with the establishment of research and teaching partnerships with three prestigious Nigerian universities: University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, and Ahmadu Bello University. This strategic initiative aims to foster collaboration, exchange knowledge, and empower the next generation of scholars and leaders.

The partnership will focus on key areas of mutual interest including:

Faculty and student exchanges: Facilitating joint research projects, teaching opportunities, and student internships to promote cross-cultural learning and collaboration.

Curriculum development: Sharing best practices and collaborating on curriculum development in fields such as STEM, humanities, and social sciences.

Capacity building: Providing workshops and training programs for faculty and staff in areas such as research methodologies, grant writing, and leadership development.

Community engagement: Engaging in joint community outreach initiatives to address shared social and economic challenges.

“This partnership is a testament to our commitment to global engagement and to empowering Black women scholars and leaders,” said Dr. Mary Schmidt Campbell, President of Spelman College. “We are excited to collaborate with these outstanding universities in Nigeria to advance knowledge, innovation, and social impact.”

The collaboration builds upon Spelman’s long-standing commitment to international partnerships. The college has previously fostered relationships with institutions in Africa, Asia, and Europe, demonstrating its dedication to a global perspective in education and research.

This strategic partnership with Nigerian universities carries significant weight, as it recognizes the vibrant intellectual landscape of the African continent and the potential for mutual growth through collaborative endeavors.

“This partnership represents a historic opportunity for our students and faculty to engage with a dynamic and rapidly growing region of the world,” said Dr. [Name], Dean of [School/Department at Spelman College]. “We believe this will not only enhance our academic programs but also contribute to broader social good.”

The establishment of these partnerships highlights Spelman College’s dedication to fostering a more interconnected and inclusive global academic landscape. The collaboration with Nigerian universities promises to be a catalyst for impactful research, innovative teaching practices, and a more equitable future for all.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
