Prepare Your Cybersecurity Refresher for New Staff and Learners

Schools and learners worldwide have turned to the internet and its resources to store and share essential documents and files. Although there are many advantages to this, there are also a few threats and risks that learners should look out for.

Most schools plan and formulate an online security refresher course for their learners to prevent any cybersecurity problems. This article will examine how educational institutions can make this refresher course for new staff members and learners.

Make a List of Rules and Regulations

The first thing that schools should list is the rules and regulations they wish their learners to follow. For instance, most hackers and cyber criminals spread their malware through unsafe websites and links. To avoid this, the school should block access to certain websites that could potentially be dangerous.

More so, many institutions do not allow learners to visit social media sites on school computers. This is an excellent regulation to have, as social media could distract learners and create an opportunity for cybercriminals to steal personal information from the learners.

Discuss Various Threats That Could Potentially Become an Issue

To make the learners and new staff members aware of the various threats that come with using the internet, the school should discuss these threats with them. For instance, it should be obvious that leaking personal information can lead to severe outcomes, such as a personal address falling into the wrong hands. More so, if an email or phone number is given away, the school could be flooded with spam mail, adware, or viruses.

Discuss Ways In Which These Threats Can Be Avoided

Once the learners and new educators understand the risks of using the internet, they need to be told how to avoid these issues. They must make strong passwords that will not be easy to crack. Additionally, these passwords should be changed frequently.

It is also crucial that specific security measures are put in place. For instance, many schools download and install firewalls to monitor and control who uses the institution’s network. Antivirus software is also essential, as it can prevent files and crucial documents from becoming corrupted.

Conclusion

Schools all over the world have turned to the internet to store and share essential documents and files. To be safe while using the internet, educational facilities should offer their new learners and educators cybersecurity refresher courses.

In these courses, educators should discuss appropriate rules and regulations to follow while using the internet. The various threats and risks of using the internet should also be mentioned – more so, the courses must be clear about how learners and educators can avoid these issues. The refresher course should explain the many safety protocols that can ensure safe computing and internet use.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
