Opinion | I’m a College President and I Hope My Campus Is Even More Political This Year

As a college president, I often hear concerns about the increasing politicization of our campuses. Some worry that it will distract from academics, foster division, or even threaten free speech. But I believe the opposite is true. I hope this year, our campus becomes even more politically engaged.
A vibrant democracy requires informed and active citizens. College campuses, with their diverse perspectives and intellectual curiosity, are fertile ground for cultivating such citizens. It’s not about forcing students to conform to a particular ideology, but about encouraging them to engage in critical thinking, debate, and civic discourse.
By welcoming diverse viewpoints, including those that challenge the status quo, we create an environment where students learn to respectfully disagree, build consensus, and develop solutions to complex issues. This experience prepares them to be active and engaged participants in the democratic process beyond the campus walls.
Political engagement can also be a powerful force for positive change. Student activism has been the driving force behind many social movements, from civil rights to environmental protection. By providing a platform for student voices and supporting their efforts, we empower them to make a difference in their communities and the world.
Of course, this requires establishing clear guidelines for respectful dialogue and ensuring that all voices are heard. We must create a climate where students feel safe expressing their opinions, even if they are unpopular. This is not about silencing dissent, but about fostering a culture of intellectual curiosity and respectful dialogue.
Ultimately, a politically engaged campus is a vibrant and dynamic one. It is a space where students learn not only about their subjects but also about themselves, their values, and their role in shaping the world around them. I believe that this is a responsibility we all share, and I hope to see our campus rise to the challenge.
