Nigel Kennedy: why I’m going on stage to play jazz with my ‘young cats’

Violin virtuoso Nigel Kennedy, renowned for his passionate interpretations of classical music, is embarking on a new musical adventure: jazz. He’s joined by a band of young, talented musicians, dubbed “The Young Cats,” and the combination promises a thrilling and unexpected sonic experience.

“It’s a whole different world, man,” Kennedy laughs, his voice brimming with enthusiasm. “Classical music is beautiful, but it can be…well, sometimes it feels like I’m stuck in a gilded cage. Jazz is all about improvisation, about taking risks, about exploring the moment. That’s where I feel truly alive.”

This isn’t a complete departure for the acclaimed violinist. Kennedy has dabbled in jazz before, even releasing albums with jazz influences. However, this tour marks a deeper dive into the genre, a commitment to a style that resonates deeply with his artistic spirit.

He’s eager to collaborate with “The Young Cats,” a group of exceptionally gifted young musicians he admires immensely. “Their energy is incredible,” Kennedy says, his eyes sparkling with admiration. “They’re pushing boundaries, they’re fearless, and they’re teaching me so much. It’s a privilege to play with them.”

The tour promises a mix of jazz standards and Kennedy’s own unique interpretations of classical pieces, infused with a vibrant jazz energy. The result is a musical journey that transcends genres, captivating audiences with its raw emotion and improvisational spirit.

“It’s not about being perfect,” Kennedy clarifies. “It’s about the feeling, the connection, the moment. We’re creating something together, something spontaneous, something alive.”

For those accustomed to the polished precision of classical concerts, this promises to be an exhilarating experience. Kennedy’s decision to embrace jazz with open arms is a testament to his artistic curiosity and his commitment to exploring the full range of his musical expression. It’s a reminder that even seasoned veterans can find new life, new inspiration, in unexpected places.

So, if you’re looking for a concert that will challenge your preconceived notions and leave you breathless with its raw energy, be sure to catch Nigel Kennedy and “The Young Cats” on their upcoming tour. It’s a musical adventure you won’t want to miss.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
