Maurice Gipson to Lead Philander Smith University in Little Rock, Arkansas

Little Rock, Arkansas – Philander Smith University (PSU), a historically Black college in Little Rock, has appointed Dr. Maurice Gipson as its new president, effective July 1, 2023. This announcement marks a new chapter for the esteemed institution, with Gipson bringing a wealth of experience and a visionary approach to the role.

Dr. Gipson, a seasoned academic leader, comes to PSU from his role as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Philander Smith’s sister institution, Clark Atlanta University. His extensive career includes leadership positions at various universities, including serving as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of the District of Columbia.

“Dr. Gipson’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence, student success, and community engagement makes him an ideal leader for Philander Smith University,” said [Name of the Board Chair], Chair of the PSU Board of Trustees. “His proven track record in building strong academic programs, fostering a diverse and inclusive campus environment, and forging partnerships will undoubtedly lead PSU to greater heights.”

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
