For years, the road to higher education felt distant and daunting for many middle schoolers in Toledo. But thanks to the innovative Impact School, a unique program aimed at bridging the gap between middle school and college, a new wave of hope and opportunity is washing over the city’s youth.

The brainchild of passionate educators and community leaders, Impact School is not a traditional high school. Instead, it operates within the existing middle school system, offering a specialized program that equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in a competitive college landscape.

The program’s core pillars are:

Academic Enrichment: Students engage in rigorous coursework that goes beyond the standard middle school curriculum, focusing on critical thinking, problem-solving, and advanced academics. They are introduced to college-level concepts and participate in project-based learning activities that spark curiosity and foster intellectual growth.

College and Career Exploration: Through career counseling sessions, guest speakers, and site visits to colleges and universities, students gain firsthand insights into diverse academic fields and career pathways. This exposure helps them discover their passions and identify potential college majors.

College Readiness: Impact School provides students with invaluable resources and support to navigate the complex college application process. They receive guidance on standardized testing, financial aid, and essay writing, ensuring they are well-prepared for the challenges ahead.

Mentorship and Support: Students are paired with dedicated mentors – university students, professionals, and community members – who provide guidance and encouragement throughout their journey. This personalized support system fosters a sense of belonging, confidence, and motivation.

The impact of Impact School is already evident. Students who participate in the program demonstrate significantly higher levels of college awareness, academic performance, and self-confidence. Many have been accepted into prestigious universities across the country, realizing their dreams of pursuing higher education.

“Before Impact School, I felt lost and unsure about my future,” shares one student. “But the program helped me discover my passion for science and provided me with the tools and support to apply to colleges that were once out of reach.”

Impact School is not just a program, it’s a movement. It is a testament to the power of community collaboration, dedicated educators, and a shared belief in the potential of every child. By breaking down barriers and empowering young minds, Impact School is paving the way for a brighter future for Toledo’s middle school students.

This initiative serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that with commitment, innovation, and the right resources, every child can reach their full potential and claim their place in the world of higher education.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
