Travel vs. College Fund: Why I Prioritize Experiences

The question of whether to prioritize saving for your children’s college fund or pursuing your own travel dreams is a complex one, often sparking heated debates. While many parents prioritize their children’s future, I’ve made a conscious decision to prioritize travel experiences over a hefty college savings account. This isn’t a decision I make lightly, but one I believe in wholeheartedly.

Let’s be clear: I’m not advocating for neglecting your child’s financial future. Education is crucial, and I fully intend to support my kids’ college aspirations. However, I firmly believe that enriching experiences, both for myself and my children, are equally valuable.

Here’s why I’ve chosen to prioritize travel:

  1. A World of Learning Beyond Textbooks: Travel offers a unique and immersive education. It broadens horizons, fosters critical thinking, and cultivates empathy and understanding of different cultures. These are skills that textbooks simply cannot teach.
  2. Creating Lasting Memories: While a college fund might feel like a concrete investment, it’s ultimately a future goal. Travel, on the other hand, offers tangible experiences that create lifelong memories and strengthen family bonds.
  3. Investing in Ourselves: As parents, we often prioritize our children’s well-being. But neglecting our own needs can lead to burnout and resentment. Traveling allows us to recharge, rediscover ourselves, and return home more engaged and fulfilled parents.
  4. Teaching Life Lessons: By choosing travel, I’m demonstrating to my children that there is value in pursuing passions and exploring the world. It teaches them the importance of prioritizing experiences over material possessions.
  5. Financial Responsibility: While my children won’t have a substantial college fund, they will learn valuable lessons about budgeting, saving, and making financial choices. They will understand that life is about making choices and accepting the consequences, a skill crucial for their future.

Of course, this isn’t the path for everyone. There are financial realities to consider, and the best choice depends on individual circumstances. But I believe that prioritizing travel doesn’t necessarily equate to neglecting our children’s futures. Instead, it’s about investing in experiences that enrich our lives, foster growth, and shape our worldview, both for ourselves and our children.

Ultimately, it’s about finding a balance. We can create a meaningful and fulfilling life for ourselves and our children, even without a hefty college savings account. We just need to be creative, prioritize wisely, and remember that the greatest lessons are often learned outside the classroom.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
