How Judy Blume’s Deenie Helped Destigmatize Masturbation

In the landscape of young adult literature, few authors have had as profound an impact as Judy Blume. Her works have tackled themes that resonate deeply with adolescent readers, often addressing subjects that are considered taboo. Among her repertoire, Deenie stands out not just as a coming-of-age story, but as a seminal work that contributed to the destigmatization of masturbation, a topic that has long been shrouded in shame and silence.

The Story of Deenie

Published in 1973, Deenie tells the story of a young girl named Deenie, who grapples with the pressures of adolescence, body image, and the expectations placed upon her in a world that often feels constrictive. Deenie is a talented swimmer, but her life takes an unexpected turn when she is diagnosed with scoliosis and must wear a back brace. Throughout the narrative, Blume delves into Deenie’s internal struggles and her journey toward self-acceptance.

One of the most pivotal aspects of the novel is Deenie’s exploration of her burgeoning sexuality, particularly her experiences with masturbation. In a candid and relatable manner, Blume addresses this often-avoided subject, illustrating that it is a normal part of human development and sexuality. Deenie’s reflections on her body and sexual feelings are portrayed with sensitivity and realism, helping to normalize the conversation around masturbation for young readers.

Breaking Taboos

At a time when discussions of sexuality, particularly in literature aimed at young audiences, were largely muted or heavily censored, Deenie broke new ground. By presenting masturbation as a natural curiosity rather than a shameful secret, Blume shifted the narrative surrounding female sexuality. The character of Deenie expresses her confusion and curiosity about her body in a way that empowered young girls to think critically and openly about their experiences.

Blume’s decision to include masturbation in Deenie was not without controversy. Some parents and educators objected to its frankness and perceived explicitness, echoing the wider societal discomfort with discussing sexual matters openly. However, the novel also faced substantial praise for its bravery and relatability. Through Deenie’s journey, Blume sparked essential conversations about bodily autonomy, self-exploration, and the importance of understanding one’s own body—topics that continue to resonate today.

The Impact on Readers

For generations of readers, Deenie has served as a gateway to understanding the complexities of their own bodies and desires. The book offered a reassuring narrative—a reminder that the heady mixture of confusion, curiosity, and emotion that accompanies adolescence is universally experienced. By seeing themselves reflected in Deenie’s experiences, many young readers found solace and validation in their struggles.

Moreover, Blume’s work encouraged a level of openness that was rare for its time, paving the way for subsequent authors to follow suit. The influence of Deenie can be seen in many contemporary young adult novels where discussions around sex and sexuality are more commonplace, reflecting a cultural shift towards acceptance and understanding.

A Legacy of Acceptance

Judy Blume’s Deenie invites readers to embrace their sexuality without shame, promoting the idea that self-exploration is a healthy part of growing up, especially for young women. By tackling the topic of masturbation head-on, Blume demystified what had long been a subject of secrecy and embarrassment.

In today’s world, where conversations about sex education and mental health are increasingly prioritized, the legacy of Deenie and its messages about self-exploration and body positivity remain relevant and vital. As more educators and parents seek to foster healthy discussions about sexuality with young people, Blume’s timeless insights continue to illuminate the path toward greater understanding and acceptance.

In conclusion, Judy Blume’s Deenie not only entertained and engaged readers but also played a pivotal role in changing the narrative around masturbation and female sexuality. It remains a cornerstone of young adult literature, encouraging openness and compassion in the complex landscape of adolescence. Through her work, Blume has demonstrated that the journey toward self-awareness and acceptance is one that deserves to be explored, embraced, and celebrated.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
