Home Generator Buying Guide: Essential Power for Your Home

Introduction:

A home generator is an essential item for every household, especially during emergencies or natural disasters. When the power goes out unexpectedly, a home generator can save the day by providing electricity to keep your family comfortable and safe. In this article, we will walk you through a comprehensive guide on what to consider when buying a home generator.

Fuel Type:

Home generators are powered by different fuel sources, including gasoline, diesel, propane, and natural gas. Each fuel type has its pros and cons. For example, gasoline is widely available but may not be the most cost-effective choice in the long run due to its shorter shelf-life and higher maintenance requirements. Diesel generators are more fuel-efficient but can be expensive upfront. Propane and natural gas options offer clean-burning energy but rely on an uninterrupted supply from your local provider.

Power Output:

Generator output is measured in watts (W) or kilowatts (kW). The more your generator can produce, the more appliances it can power simultaneously. It’s crucial to assess how much power you need during an outage to select an appropriate generator. Make a list of essential devices you want to power during an emergency and calculate their total wattage requirement. To avoid overloading your generator, always opt for one with higher output than your calculated need.

Size and Portability:

Home generators come in various sizes – from small portable units to large standby generators. Portable generators are easy to maneuver and store when not in use, making them suitable for homeowners who only need temporary backup power during infrequent power outages. In contrast, standby generators are permanently installed outdoor systems that can automatically start when a power outage occurs – perfect for people who want a consistent power supply without any hassle.

Noise Level:

Generators create noise while operating due to their engines and cooling fans. For residential use, look for models designed to operate quietly, so you don’t disturb your neighbors or family members. Pay attention to the decibel (dB) rating; generators with a lower dB rating will produce less noise.

Automatic Transfer Switch:

An automatic transfer switch (ATS) is advisable for standby generators. It detects when the power goes out and automatically starts your generator, then switches the power source from the utility to the generator. When the electricity is restored, the ATS switches back and turns off your generator. This feature ensures continuous power and convenience.

Price and Warranty:

When buying a home generator, consider your budget and look for models within your price range that meet essential requirements. Do not forget to factor in installation costs and ongoing maintenance expenses. It’s also wise to choose a reputable brand that offers an adequate warranty period, ensuring you get maximum value for your investment.

Conclusion:

A reliable home generator can provide peace of mind during uncertain times. By considering factors like fuel type, power output, size, noise level, automatic transfer switch availability, pricing, and warranty, you can find the perfect home generator tailored to your needs. Be prepared for unexpected power outages and keep your household safe and comfortable with a reliable backup energy source.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
