Sober Tourism: Gen Z’s Alcohol-Free Vacation Trend in 2023

As travel trends evolve, a notable shift is occurring among younger generations, particularly Generation Z. This demographic is steering away from traditional vacation norms that often involve partying and alcohol consumption. Instead, they are embracing sober tourism, a growing trend that emphasizes wellness, mindfulness, and experiences free from alcohol.

The Shift in Travel Preferences

According to a 2023 survey conducted by Hotels.com, a remarkable 74% of Gen Z travelers express interest in accommodations that offer alcohol-free options. This statistic underscores a significant transformation in travel preferences, where wellness and self-care take precedence over nightlife and indulgence. The survey also revealed that 40% of respondents are likely to book a “detox trip“—a getaway focused on rejuvenation rather than revelry.

Why Sober Tourism is Gaining Popularity

Several factors contribute to the rise of sober tourism among Gen Z:

  • Health Consciousness: Mental and physical health are paramount for this generation. Many travelers are prioritizing wellness and self-care over traditional partying, seeking activities like yoga, meditation, and spa treatments.
  • Emotional Control: A significant 25% of respondents cited better emotional and physical control as a reason for choosing sobriety during trips. This reflects a growing awareness of the impact of alcohol on mental well-being.
  • Social Media Influence: Platforms like Instagram and TikTok promote wellness-centric lifestyles, showcasing destinations and experiences that align with sober tourism.
  • Intentional Travel: There is a shift towards more meaningful travel experiences. Gen Z is interested in exploring destinations that offer cultural enrichment, adventure, and personal growth rather than just nightlife.

Detox Trips: The New Vacation Trend

As the trend of sober tourism gains momentum, the concept of “detox trips” is becoming increasingly popular. These vacations focus on health and wellness, allowing travelers to disconnect from their daily routines and immerse themselves in rejuvenating experiences.

Destinations such as Bali and Las Vegas are adapting to this trend, offering a variety of activities that cater to the sober traveler. In Bali, wellness retreats focus on yoga, meditation, and healthy dining, providing a serene environment for relaxation. Meanwhile, Las Vegas, traditionally known for its vibrant nightlife, is evolving to include wellness-focused offerings such as spas, fitness classes, and healthy dining options.

Accommodations for Sober Travelers

Hotels and resorts are taking note of this shift in consumer behavior. Many are now promoting alcohol-free options, ensuring that their amenities cater to the wellness-focused traveler. Features commonly found in these accommodations include:

  • Alcohol-Free Bars: Establishments are creating mocktail menus and offering a variety of non-alcoholic beverages to cater to guests who prefer not to drink.
  • Wellness Programs: Many hotels are introducing wellness programs that include yoga classes, guided meditation sessions, and fitness workshops.
  • Healthy Dining: Restaurants within these hotels are increasingly focusing on nutritious meals, organic ingredients, and plant-based options that support a healthy lifestyle.

Industry Insights and Future Trends

According to Melanie Fish from Expedia, the trend of sober tourism is on a steady rise, with more travelers opting for experiences that align with their values. This aligns with findings from Priceline’s 2026 report, which highlights Gen Z’s intentional, experience-driven travel habits.

The travel industry is responding to these changes by developing tailored packages and offerings that cater to this new wave of travelers. As more hotels and destinations recognize the importance of wellness and alcohol-free options, the landscape of tourism is likely to continue evolving.

Conclusion: A New Era of Travel

The rise of sober tourism marks a significant shift in how younger generations approach travel. With an emphasis on wellness, emotional control, and meaningful experiences, Gen Z is reshaping the vacation landscape. As this trend continues to grow, it is clear that the future of travel will prioritize health and well-being over traditional partying and alcohol consumption.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
