The West Northfield School District 31 is taking a proactive approach to parenting and youth mental health, as highlighted in their March 2026 CATCH newsletter. This month’s edition is packed with valuable resources, community engagement opportunities, and expert insights aimed at enhancing the parenting experience and supporting children’s emotional well-being.

Transitioning to Mentorship: A Webinar with Dr. Leigh Weisz

One of the standout features of the newsletter is the upcoming Lunch and Learn webinar scheduled for May 6, which will feature renowned psychologist Dr. Leigh Weisz, PsyD. This engaging session will focus on the critical transition from merely managing children’s behavior to adopting a mentorship role as they grow. Dr. Weisz will emphasize the importance of compassion, perspective, and resilience-building in parenting.

Parents attending the webinar can expect to gain insights on:

  • Understanding the developmental stages of children
  • Strategies for fostering a supportive environment
  • Tools for building resilience in children
  • Balancing guidance with independence

This informative session promises to equip parents with the necessary skills to adapt their approaches as their children mature, ultimately fostering a more nurturing and empowering parent-child relationship.

Brave Parenting: Resources for Today’s Challenges

The newsletter also introduces the Brave Parenting materials—an initiative designed to provide parents with tools and strategies to navigate the complexities of modern parenting. As children face unique challenges in today’s world, these resources aim to bolster parents’ confidence and effectiveness in guiding their children.

Key aspects of the Brave Parenting program include:

  • Practical tips for managing stress and anxiety in children
  • Guidance on fostering open communication
  • Encouragement of emotional intelligence development

By leveraging these resources, parents can create a supportive atmosphere that promotes their children’s mental and emotional health.

Engaging with Community Resources

In addition to the webinar and resource materials, the CATCH newsletter emphasizes the importance of community engagement. Building connections with other parents and local organizations can enhance support networks, provide additional resources, and foster a sense of belonging.

Parents are encouraged to participate in local events and initiatives that focus on youth mental health, including the upcoming 5K fundraiser scheduled for April 4. This event aims to raise funds for CATCH initiatives, which are critical for supporting mental health programs for youth in the community.

Participating in community activities not only benefits the children but also helps parents to:

  • Share experiences and strategies with other families
  • Access expert advice and support
  • Contribute to the overall well-being of the community

The collaboration among parents, educators, and mental health professionals is essential in creating a nurturing environment for children, paving the way for their success and resilience.

Podcast Insights: Staying Connected Without Rescuing

The March newsletter also highlights a new podcast episode that addresses the theme of maintaining connections with children without resorting to the instinct to rescue them from their challenges. This enlightening episode delves into the balance between guiding children and allowing them to experience and learn from difficult situations.

Listeners can gain insights on:

  • Recognizing when to step in and when to allow independence
  • Strategies for fostering problem-solving skills in children
  • Building trust and open communication

This podcast serves as an excellent resource for parents seeking to navigate the complexities of fostering independence while remaining a supportive presence in their children’s lives.

Conclusion: A Commitment to Mental Health and Stronger Bonds

The West Northfield School District 31 CATCH program is committed to empowering parents and enhancing youth mental health through thoughtful resources, engaging community initiatives, and expert guidance. As the importance of mental health becomes increasingly recognized, programs like CATCH provide invaluable support to families navigating the challenges of parenting.

By participating in webinars, utilizing resources like Brave Parenting materials, engaging in community fundraising events, and listening to insightful podcasts, parents can cultivate a more resilient and nurturing environment for their children. Together, we can foster a community where mental health is prioritized, and every child has the opportunity to thrive.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
