Introduction:

In today’s digital world, computer science is an essential skill for students of all ages. For educators looking to introduce programming concepts to their students, the Hour of Code™ is a perfect starting point. The global movement, organized by Code.org, aims to demystify code and show that anyone can learn the basics. With millions of participants worldwide, it has become one of the most successful initiatives in computer science education.

In this article, we’ll guide you through the process of hosting the Hour of Code™ in your classroom, even if you’re a complete newbie when it comes to computer programming.

Step 1: Learn the Basics

Before you can teach coding to your students, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with some fundamental concepts. Fortunately, there are several free online resources available, such as:

– Code.org’s own tutorials (https://studio.code.org/courses)

– Scratch (https://scratch.mit.edu/)

– Khan Academy (https://www.khanacademy.org/computing/computer-programming)

By dedicating some time to learning the basics, you’ll be more prepared and confident when guiding your students through their Hour of Code™ activities.

Step 2: Choose an Activity

Hour of Code™ features a vast library of activities catering to various age groups and experience levels. Some popular options include:

– Minecraft: Voyage Aquatic (https://code.org/minecraft)

– Dance Party (https://code.org/dance)

– Star Wars: Building a Galaxy with Code (https://code.org/starwars)

Choose an activity that you believe will engage and excite your students while also aligning with their skill level.

Step 3: Plan Your Event

Once you’ve gained some experience with coding basics and selected an activity for your classroom, create a plan for your Hour of Code™ event. Consider the following:

– Duration: Although it’s called the “Hour of Code,” the time frame can be adjusted to meet your classroom schedule.

– Format: Will your event be in-person or virtual? Decide on the setup that works best for your classroom circumstances.

– Supplies: Ensure that you have all necessary equipment, including computers, tablets, or other devices and a stable internet connection.

Step 4: Engage Your Students

To encourage active participation, discuss the importance of coding and technology in everyday life. Provide real-world examples of how coding has influenced various industries and professions. By demonstrating the relevance of computer science skills, you can motivate your students to fully immerse themselves in the Hour of Code™ activities.

Step 5: Reflect and Share

After completing the Hour of Code™ event, provide an opportunity for students to share their experiences and reflect on what they’ve learned. This can be done through class discussions or individual journaling. Sharing stories and achievements will cultivate a sense of accomplishment among your students and encourage their continued interest in computer science.

Conclusion:

By following these steps, even educators new to programming can confidently bring the Hour of Code™ to their classrooms. With dedication, planning, and enthusiasm, you’ll provide a valuable learning experience that will inspire a new generation to explore the exciting world of coding and computer science.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
