The Amazon Fire tablet has made a name for itself as a budget-friendly device, especially popular among families. The children’s version comes with a kid-proof case, parental controls, and a year of Amazon Kids+ subscription, making it ideal for kids of all ages. But what truly enhances the experience of using a Fire tablet are the apps tailored for children. In this article, we’ll dive into the best Fire tablet apps for kids, covering everything from educational tools to entertaining streaming options.

1. Amazon Kids+: A Gateway to Endless Fun

Amazon Kids+ is a must-have for any parent with a Fire tablet. This subscription service provides access to thousands of books, videos, games, and educational apps specifically designed for children. With a vast library that features content from popular brands and franchises, kids can easily find something they’ll love.

One of the best features of Amazon Kids+ is its age-appropriate filtering system. Parents can control what their children access, ensuring that the content matches their kids’ developmental stages. This app is not just a passive viewing experience; it encourages interactive learning through puzzles, quizzes, and engaging stories.

2. Netflix: Streaming Entertainment for the Whole Family

In today’s digital age, streaming platforms have taken over traditional media consumption. Netflix is a household name and offers a wide range of children’s programming, from beloved classics like *Peppa Pig* to new hits like *Carmen Sandiego*. The Fire tablet’s screen size is perfect for binge-watching episodes or movies during family movie night.

What’s great about Netflix is its ability to create individual profiles for kids. This personalization allows parents to curate what their children can watch based on their preferences. Additionally, the platform offers educational documentaries that can be both entertaining and informative, providing a great balance of fun and learning.

3. ABCmouse: An Educational Powerhouse

If you’re looking for a comprehensive educational app, ABCmouse is a top contender. Designed for children aged 2-8, it provides a curriculum covering subjects like math, reading, art, and science through engaging games and activities. The app also offers a progress tracking feature for parents to keep tabs on their child’s learning journey.

What sets ABCmouse apart is its animated characters that guide kids through various levels, making learning feel like an adventure. The interactive design encourages kids to participate actively rather than passively consuming information, which is crucial for effective learning.

4. PBS Kids Games: Quality Content from Trusted Sources

PBS Kids has long been a trusted source for educational children’s programming. Their PBS Kids Games app extends this trust into the digital realm, offering a plethora of games featuring characters from popular shows. This makes it particularly appealing as it merges familiar faces with a variety of learning experiences.

The app includes games that cover a range of subjects, including math, reading, and problem-solving. The integration of storytelling elements into the games enhances engagement, ensuring that children not only play but also learn critical skills in a fun environment. Plus, it’s completely free, making it an accessible option for families.

Epic! is often described as the Netflix for books, providing children with access to a vast library of reading material. The app is designed for kids aged 12 and under and features a collection of over 40,000 books, audiobooks, and educational videos. It’s an excellent tool for fostering a love for reading from a young age.

Their apps, such as *Moose Math* and *Pet Bingo*, are designed to make learning math and vocabulary skills entertaining and interactive. With colorful graphics and fun characters, these apps naturally draw kids in.

Each app offers different activities that focus on specific skills, allowing kids to learn at their own pace. The design is intuitive, making it easy for younger children to navigate. 7. Minecraft: Education Edition: Building Skills Creatively

Minecraft is more than just a game; it’s a platform that fosters creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration. Minecraft: Education Edition is specifically designed for classroom settings, but it can also be utilized at home to encourage learning through exploration and creativity. Children can create their own worlds, solve problems, and collaborate with others, all while developing essential skills.

The app includes a wealth of lesson plans aimed at educators, but these can easily be adapted for home use. From history to mathematics, the possibilities are endless. This approach to learning through play not only keeps kids engaged but also encourages a passion for discovery and innovation.

8. ScratchJr: Coding for Young Minds

In an age where technology is ever-present, introducing children to coding at a young age can be incredibly beneficial. ScratchJr is a fantastic app that teaches the basics of programming through interactive storytelling. Designed for kids aged 5-7, it allows them to create their own interactive stories and games, all while developing logical thinking and problem-solving skills.

The app’s simple interface encourages creativity, as kids can drag-and-drop visual programming blocks to animate characters. It’s a playful way to introduce coding concepts without overwhelming them with complex syntax. With ScratchJr, children learn the fundamentals of coding while having fun, setting the stage for more advanced programming skills in the future.

9. Osmo: Blending Digital and Physical Play

Osmo takes a unique approach by combining physical items with digital interactions. Using a compatible base and reflector with an iPad or Fire tablet, kids can play interactive games that encourage hands-on learning. Whether they’re solving puzzles, learning math, or even drawing, Osmo provides a multisensory experience that engages different types of learners.

Osmo’s apps, like *Osmo Pizza Co.* and *Osmo Words*, focus on critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Because the games require physical pieces, they also promote collaboration among kids. This balance of digital and physical interaction is what makes Osmo stand out as one of the best Fire tablet apps for kids.

Statistics on Screen Time and Learning

Understanding the impact of screen time on children’s learning is crucial for parents. According to a report from the American Academy of Pediatrics, children aged 2 to 5 should have no more than one hour of high-quality programming each day. However, many parents also recognize the potential educational benefits of apps and digital content when used appropriately.

Research by Common Sense Media reveals that 60% of parents believe that educational apps can help their kids learn important skills. This statistic highlights the growing acceptance of technology in education, particularly among younger demographics. When choosing apps, parents should prioritize those that not only entertain but also educate, ensuring a balanced approach to screen time. (See: Screen time and children's development.)

Expert Perspectives on Children and Technology

Experts in child development emphasize the importance of moderation and active engagement when it comes to children’s use of technology. Dr. Patricia Kuhl, a professor at the University of Washington, suggests that while technology can provide valuable learning opportunities, it should be used alongside traditional reading and social interaction. She states, “Children learn best when they engage with others, especially adults, in conversation about what they’re seeing and doing on screen.”

This perspective encourages parents to participate in their children’s digital experiences, discussing the content and reinforcing lessons learned through apps. By combining digital learning with parental involvement, children can maximize the benefits of technology while minimizing potential drawbacks.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
