Tallahassee, FL – In a move aimed at ensuring stability during a period of transition, Florida A&M University (FAMU) has appointed Dr. Maurice E. “Mo” Beard as Interim President. The announcement comes following the resignation of former president, Dr. Larry Robinson, who stepped down last month after facing pressure from faculty and staff.

Dr. Beard, a veteran of FAMU’s faculty and administration, is no stranger to the challenges and opportunities facing the university. He has served in various leadership roles, most recently as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. His deep understanding of FAMU’s culture, academic programs, and community engagement makes him a well-suited choice to guide the university through this transitional phase.

“Dr. Beard is a respected leader with a proven track record of success,” said [Insert Name], Chair of the FAMU Board of Trustees. “He understands the needs of our students, faculty, and staff, and he is committed to maintaining the academic excellence and the vibrant spirit of FAMU during this time.”

Dr. Beard’s primary focus as Interim President will be on stability, continuity, and setting the stage for a successful transition to a new permanent president. His priorities include:

Maintaining academic quality: Ensuring that FAMU’s academic programs remain strong and that students receive a high-quality education.

Supporting faculty and staff: Providing necessary resources and support to faculty and staff to ensure their continued success and morale.

Engaging the FAMU community: Facilitating open communication and collaboration with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the wider community.

Preparing for the presidential search: Working closely with the Board of Trustees to establish a search committee and conduct a thorough and transparent search for a new permanent president.

Dr. Beard expressed his commitment to guiding FAMU through this transition with a focus on excellence and progress. “I am honored to be entrusted with this responsibility,” said Dr. Beard. “FAMU is an institution with a rich history and a bright future. I am committed to working collaboratively with the entire FAMU community to ensure a smooth transition and a continued commitment to academic excellence.”

Dr. Beard’s appointment is effective immediately. The Board of Trustees will begin the process of selecting a search committee for the new president in the coming weeks.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
