Are you searching for balanced literacy products that you can use with your learners? Check out the definitive list that we made. Who did we miss?

Spelling Balloons – Spelling Balloons helps learners read and learn to spell words in a game environment. With a focus on sight word recognition abilities, increasing proficiency and fluency in reading, and practice with auditory processing, this product fits well in a balanced literacy class routine or as additional at-home practice for elementary learners. Spelling Balloons is customizable with the ability to make individualized word lists and to adjust word pronunciation and spelling based on location; for example, British vs. English pronunciation and spelling. The product has both speed and difficulty settings for further customization.

Study Island– Study Island is an all-in-one practice website for learners to work on literacy, math, science, and social studies abilities. It is built around state standards, so regardless of your location, the content and practice provided on the website will align with your class teaching. Study Island is a great tool to use for high stakes testing preparation and provides real-time progress monitoring for educators and guardians. Beyond simple practice, Study Island can also be incorporated into class lessons for formative assessment and differentiation. It even enables educators to import NWEA MAP assessment information for individual learners and calculates a targeted learning path to fill in knowledge gaps!

IXL Learning– IXL Learning has been proven to be effective in offering a comprehensive program of study-based math and English language arts content for kindergarten to grade 12.  It produces

ReadingIQ – is a literacy product that brings a personalized reading experience to each kid based on his or her needs. With ReadingIQ’s exclusive Reading Level Assessments, guardians and educators can be confident their kids or learners will find kid-friendly books that match their reading level. Reading Level Assessments, which take just minutes to comprehensive, dynamically adjust their degree of difficulty in response to each kid’s performance. ReadingIQ then recommends books at the appropriate level for the kid. As kids use ReadingIQ and enhance their reading abilities, the product periodically prompts them to retake Reading Level Assessments to adjust their recommended level.

Lalilo – Lalilo is a web-based product that assists early childhood educators in imparting literacy abilities using customized and comprehensive guidelines. Learners progress through the game and meet fun cartoon characters, read books, and have comprehensive quests in a structured system. The AI intuitively assesses learner progress to prescribe lessons for kids.

LightSail Education –  Educators can use LightSail Education to monitor their learners’ reading in real-time and in detail. Educators and learners can monitor learners’ per-page progress through books in addition to their performance on Common Core-aligned assessment tasks. This tool also provides learners with access to books in the school’s digital library, which can be downloaded for later use. Educators can also make use of testing results to track learner progress over time.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
