Educational facilities all over the world use social sciences as part of their curriculum. These subjects revolve around humanity and society – for example, students will be taught about the economy, social behavior, politics, and social institutions.

More so, there are plenty of careers that are based on this particular academic field. In this article, we will be discussing everything that there is to know about social sciences, including its definition and the role it plays in higher education. More so, we will discuss a few examples of subjects that fall under this category.

What Are The Social Sciences?

In short, the various subjects that are defined as ‘social sciences’ revolve around how society works. For example, social scientists study institutions, such as the government and economy, to understand how they function and can be improved. On top of this, they will research how humans interact with each other and what drives our behavior.

Contrary to popular belief, this field is very different when compared to natural science. Social science discusses the constructed world instead of the natural environment. When you study natural science, you will focus on aspects of the world that occur without human beings’ influence, such as the rain cycle.

Examples Of Social Science Subjects

Social science is a very broad academic field that includes various subjects:

  • Anthropology – this is a study that revolves around humanity. If you choose this subject, you will learn about human biology, behavior, and past societies.
  • Geography – there are various aspects to this subject. For example, development Geography focuses on human populations, settlements, and statistics.
  • Psychology – this subject revolves around the human mind and behavior. More so, majors in this field will learn about human development and emotions.
  • Economics – students in this field discuss the economy and how it influences people.
  • Political science – this discipline deals with systems of governance and how they impact the general population.
  • Sociology – this study focuses on society and development.

The Role Of Social Sciences In Education

Students must discuss social science and the topics that it covers. In doing this, they will understand people better and learn from the mistakes that we have made in the past. These subjects also focus on fundamental concepts and ideas, such as the economy and the human mind.

Concluding Thoughts

Social sciences are essentially academic subjects that focus on human beings and our behavior. This includes plenty of disciplines, such as Geography, Anthropology, Sociology, Political Science, Economics, and Psychology. Students must learn about these concepts and ideas in school to better prepare them for the real world.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
