Amherst College is a private liberal arts institution with an acceptance rate of 13%. Situated in a small town in Western Massachusetts, Amherst stands at #1 or #2 in national rankings of top liberal arts institutions. It is one of the most selective colleges in the United States. Amherst boasts an open curriculum with no distribution requirements. Because of its accomplishments in STEM and the liberal arts, Phi Beta Kappa granted the university membership. The courses at Amherst are supported by a healthy 7:1 student/faculty ratio. You can even supplement the Amherst course offerings with classes from the other schools in the five-institution consortium: Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, Hampshire College, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Overview of Amherst College Admissions

Amherst College boasts a highly competitive admissions pool with a low acceptance rate and high average SAT/ACT scores. Amherst has a robust admissions process that involves a multitude of academic measures. A persuasive essay, Amherst writing supplement, and glowing recommendation letters can bolster your application, along with being involved with student organizations and attempting a demanding course load. Students with unique talents and accomplishments can still receive strong consideration even if their GPAs are outside Amherst’s mean range.

Admissions Data

During the 2018-19 admissions phase, Amherst had an acceptance rate of 13%. For every 100 students who submitted applications, 13 students gained admission, making Amherst’s admissions process highly competitive.

SAT  Requirements and Scores

Throughout the 2018-19 admissions phase, 47% of admitted students provided SAT scores. This admissions data reveals that most of Amherst’s admitted students score within the top 20% nationally on the SAT. For the reading and writing section, 50% of students admitted to Amherst scored between 700 and 770, while 25% scored under 700, and 25% scored over 770. In the math section, 50% of students scored between 720 and 790, while 25% score under 720, and 25% scored above 790. Applicants with an overall SAT score of 1560 or higher will have better competitive chances.

ACT  Requirements and Scores

During the 2018-19 admissions phase, 54% of admitted students sent ACT scores. This admissions data reveals that most of Amherst’s admitted students score within the top 5% nationally on the ACT. 50% of students admitted to Amherst received an overall ACT score between 30 and 34, while 25% scored over 34, and 25% scored under 30.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
