After the gripping conclusion of Dear Child, you may find yourself searching for your next binge-worthy series filled with suspense, intrigue, and compelling storytelling. Lucky for you, Netflix has a treasure trove of crime dramas that will keep your adrenaline pumping and your mind racing. In this article, we will highlight the 5 best Netflix crime dramas to watch post-Dear Child, ensuring your streaming experience remains as thrilling as ever.

1. Mindhunter: Delving into the Psychopath’s Mind

Set in the late 1970s, Mindhunter takes viewers on a chilling journey into the world of criminal psychology. Based on real events, this series follows FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench, along with psychologist Wendy Carr, as they develop criminal profiling techniques that revolutionize law enforcement. As they interview notorious serial killers, you’ll witness their evolving understanding of what drives people to commit heinous acts.

What makes Mindhunter stand out among the best Netflix crime dramas is its meticulous attention to detail and character development. Each episode not only focuses on the interviews but also explores the personal struggles of the agents, making it a multi-layered narrative. The show boasts exceptional performances, particularly by Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany, and is helmed by acclaimed director David Fincher, adding a level of cinematic quality rarely seen in television.

Beyond its gripping narrative, Mindhunter also serves as an insightful commentary on the criminal justice system in America. It tackles the complexities of mental health, societal influences, and the nature-versus-nurture debate, challenging viewers to consider what leads individuals to commit violent acts. The show’s ability to weave in real-life events and figures, such as Edmund Kemper and Jerry Brudos, further enhances its authenticity and educational value.

In addition to its critical acclaim, Mindhunter sparked renewed interest in criminal psychology and profiling, influencing both popular culture and academic discussions. It serves as a vital resource for anyone interested in understanding the darker aspects of human behavior.

2. Ozark: A Dark Descent into Money Laundering

Ozark tells the story of financial planner Marty Byrde, who relocates his family to the Ozarks after a money-laundering scheme goes wrong. What initially appears to be a fresh start quickly spirals into a web of crime, danger, and moral dilemmas. This series thrives on building tension and exploring the consequences of criminal decisions, making it a riveting choice for fans of Dear Child.

The cinematography in Ozark is as striking as its narrative. The show’s bleak yet beautiful landscapes serve as a sharp contrast to the dark deeds unfolding within them. The gripping performances by Jason Bateman and Laura Linney bring the complexities of their characters to life, showcasing the lengths people will go to in order to protect their families — even if it means becoming embroiled in a criminal underworld.

One aspect that elevates Ozark is its exploration of the moral ambiguities faced by its characters. As Marty and Wendy delve deeper into criminal activities, viewers are left to grapple with their ethical decisions. The series raises important questions about the nature of crime, the consequences of one’s actions, and the impact on family ties. This moral complexity resonates with audiences and makes the show relatable and engaging.

Statistically, Ozark has garnered numerous awards, including several Primetime Emmy Awards, demonstrating its critical acclaim and popularity. It has also been praised for its writing, pacing, and character arcs, all of which contribute to its position among the best Netflix crime dramas.

3. Narcos: The Rise and Fall of Pablo Escobar

Narcos explores the tumultuous and violent world of drug cartels in Colombia, focusing primarily on the infamous Pablo Escobar. This series is not just a dramatization of events; it provides a detailed and harrowing look at the real-life consequences of the drug trade, highlighting both the criminal activities of Escobar and the efforts of law enforcement to bring him down. The storytelling is intense, filled with action and ethical dilemmas that will keep you glued to the screen. (See: Mindhunter TV series overview.)

One of the strongest aspects of Narcos is its authentic portrayal of Colombian culture and history. It beautifully balances thrilling action with poignant moments, giving viewers insight into the lives affected by the drug trade, from the impoverished communities to the law enforcement officers risking their lives. The charismatic performances, especially by Wagner Moura as Escobar, elevate this series to the ranks of the best Netflix crime dramas.

Furthermore, Narcos goes beyond just Escobar’s story by showcasing the extensive drug trafficking network and the ensuing violence that plagued Colombia during the 1980s and 1990s. By introducing various characters, both criminal and law enforcement, it captures the broader implications of the drug trade on society. This multifaceted approach invites viewers to consider not only the actions of individuals but also the systemic issues that fuel crime.

Critically acclaimed and widely popular, Narcos has also led to discussions about drug policy and law enforcement tactics, influencing public perception and governmental approaches to drug-related issues. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by nations grappling with the repercussions of drug trafficking.

4. Money Heist (La Casa de Papel): A Masterclass in Heists

Money Heist, or La Casa de Papel, is a Spanish series that has become a global sensation. It revolves around a group of robbers led by the enigmatic Professor, who plan the biggest heist in recorded history: to infiltrate the Royal Mint of Spain and print billions of euros. As the plan unfolds, tensions rise, alliances form and shatter, and viewers are left on the edge of their seats.

What sets Money Heist apart is its unique narrative structure, filled with flashbacks and shifting perspectives that keep the story fresh and engaging. The character development is rich, allowing audiences to connect with not just the robbers but also the hostages and the law enforcement officials involved. The series has garnered numerous awards and has been acclaimed for its thrilling plot, complex characters, and emotional depth, solidifying its place among the best Netflix crime dramas.

Thematically, Money Heist tackles issues of resistance, social inequality, and the impact of capitalism, making it relevant in today’s world. The robbers, each with their unique backstory and motivation, become symbols of rebellion against an unjust system, challenging viewers to reflect on their own societal constructs. The show has sparked a cultural phenomenon, influencing fashion and even inspiring protests in real life.

With its blend of action, drama, and political commentary, Money Heist has left a lasting impact on audiences globally. Its ability to intertwine personal stories with broader social issues is what makes it compelling and thought-provoking, further solidifying its status as one of the best Netflix crime dramas.

5. The Sinner: A Psychological Thriller

The Sinner is a unique crime drama that focuses on the psychological motivations behind crimes rather than just the crimes themselves. Each season follows detective Harry Ambrose as he investigates complex cases that often involve seemingly ordinary individuals committing shocking acts of violence. The show raises questions about morality, trauma, and the capacity for evil within us all, making it a fascinating watch. We covered latest Netflix releases in more detail.

What truly captivates viewers in The Sinner is the way it unravels the psychological layers of its characters. This series doesn’t just present a crime; it explores the intricate web of events and emotions that lead to a person committing such a drastic act. Each season offers a different case, making it fresh and engaging while maintaining a consistent quality in storytelling. Bill Pullman’s performance as Ambrose is particularly noteworthy, as he navigates the murky waters of human psychology with depth and nuance.

Additionally, The Sinner has been praised for its cinematography, which enhances the storytelling by creating a palpable sense of tension and unease. The use of settings, lighting, and camera angles adds an atmospheric quality that draws viewers deeper into the psychological struggle of the characters. By presenting crime through a psychological lens, the series invites introspection and discussion regarding the complexities of human behavior.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
