AMA Chair: Healthcare Affordability Crisis Impacts Patient Access (2026)

On March 20, 2026, Dr. David H. Aizuss, the Chair of the American Medical Association (AMA) Board, delivered a poignant testimony before the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health. Representing the interests of physicians across the nation, Dr. Aizuss’s remarks emphasized a pressing issue in the healthcare landscape—affordability and access, particularly as they relate to mental health services.

The Financial Strain on Physician Practices

In his testimony, Dr. Aizuss shed light on the significant financial challenges that many physician practices are currently facing. These financial strains not only affect the operational viability of medical practices but also have a direct correlation with patient care quality. The testimony highlighted how diminished financial stability for physicians can lead to several adverse outcomes for patients, including:

  • Higher Costs: Patients are increasingly faced with rising healthcare costs, which can deter them from seeking necessary medical attention.
  • Longer Wait Times: The financial pressures on healthcare providers often result in reduced staffing and resources, leading to extended wait times for appointments.
  • Reduced Access: Underserved areas are particularly impacted, as financial instability can lead to the closure of practices or a decrease in available services.

The Link Between Physician Stability and Patient Access

Dr. Aizuss made a compelling connection between the economic health of physician practices and patients’ access to mental health services. He articulated that when physicians struggle financially, it can exacerbate existing barriers to care for patients, especially those in vulnerable communities. This correlation is particularly concerning at a time when mental health issues are becoming increasingly prevalent across the U.S.

According to recent statistics, nearly one in five adults in the U.S. experiences mental illness, yet many do not receive the care they need. The AMA’s advocacy efforts are aimed at ensuring that healthcare systems provide adequate support for mental health—an area that has historically faced stigma and neglect. Dr. Aizuss’s testimony serves as a reminder that without a sustainable financial model for healthcare providers, the gap in mental health access will only widen.

Proposed Solutions to Improve Affordability

During his testimony, Dr. Aizuss urged Congress to consider various strategies to alleviate the financial burden on physician practices. Some of the key recommendations included:

  • Reforming Payment Models: Transitioning to value-based care models that prioritize patient outcomes over volume could provide a more sustainable financial framework for physicians.
  • Increasing Funding for Mental Health Services: Targeted funding could help expand access to mental health resources, especially in underserved areas.
  • Reducing Administrative Burdens: Streamlining paperwork and reducing the bureaucracy that physicians face can free up resources to focus more on patient care.

Implications for Patients and Communities

The implications of Dr. Aizuss’s testimony extend beyond the physician community; they resonate deeply with patients and their families. Affordability in healthcare is not just a financial issue; it is also a matter of equity and access. When financial barriers impede access to care, the consequences can be dire—particularly for those suffering from mental health conditions.

In underserved communities, where healthcare resources are already limited, the closure of practices can lead to increased health disparities. Patients may be forced to travel long distances to receive care or forgo treatment altogether, exacerbating their conditions and leading to more significant health crises.

The Role of Policymakers

Policymakers play a crucial role in addressing these challenges. By prioritizing healthcare reform that considers both the financial health of providers and the needs of patients, legislators can help create a system that promotes accessible, affordable care for all. Dr. Aizuss’s testimony serves as a clarion call for immediate action to tackle the intertwined issues of healthcare affordability, physician stability, and patient access.

Conclusion

The testimony presented by Dr. David H. Aizuss before Congress sheds light on the critical link between the financial stability of healthcare providers and the accessibility of care for patients, particularly in the realm of mental health. As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, it is imperative for all stakeholders—including physicians, patients, and policymakers—to engage in dialogue and collaborative efforts to ensure that quality care remains within reach for every individual.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
