Global Entry Suspension 2026: Travel Chaos Amid Shutdown

On February 22, 2026, the U.S. government announced the suspension of the Global Entry program, a decision that has left many international travelers facing significant disruptions as they return to the United States. This suspension comes during a partial government shutdown, further complicating an already challenging travel environment.

Understanding the Global Entry Program

The Global Entry program, managed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), is designed to expedite the process for pre-approved, low-risk travelers entering the country. For a fee of $120, approved members enjoy quicker passage through customs and immigration, which is especially beneficial for frequent international travelers and business professionals with tight schedules.

The Impact of the Suspension

With the suspension of Global Entry, many travelers are now experiencing hours-long processing delays upon their return to the U.S. This situation has sparked frustration among vacationers and business travelers alike, as they navigate the complexities of re-entering the country without the benefits of expedited processing.

Customer Experience Deterioration

The suspension has led to lengthy wait times at airports, causing travelers to miss connections and adding unwelcome stress to their journeys. Many users who had paid the $120 enrollment fee are particularly disheartened, as they had anticipated a smoother experience when returning home. Travel advisors are now working diligently to manage expectations, advising clients to prepare for longer waits and potential disruptions.

Temporary Pauses and Resumptions

While the Global Entry program faced suspension, another travel facilitation service, TSA PreCheck, also encountered temporary delays but resumed operations by February 23. TSA PreCheck allows low-risk travelers to enjoy expedited security screening at airports, a service that many rely on during busy travel periods. Fortunately, the quick resumption of TSA PreCheck provides some relief during this tumultuous time.

Self-Funding Nature of the Programs

Interestingly, it’s important to note that both Global Entry and TSA PreCheck are self-funding programs, meaning they do not rely on taxpayer dollars to operate. Instead, the fees collected from program participants are used to sustain and improve the services. This self-funding model has raised concerns among travelers regarding the impact of government shutdowns on services they have already paid for.

Advice for Travelers During the Shutdown

As travelers navigate this challenging landscape, there are several strategies to mitigate the impact of the Global Entry suspension:

Arrive Early: Travelers should plan to arrive at the airport well in advance of their flight to account for longer processing times.

Stay Informed: Regularly check for updates from CBP on the status of the Global Entry program and any other travel advisories.

Consider Alternative Programs: For those who frequently travel internationally, it may be beneficial to explore other expedited entry programs that may not be affected by the current situation.

Contact Travel Advisors: If you have a travel advisor, reach out for tailored advice and support during this time.

Looking Ahead

The suspension of the Global Entry program amid the ongoing government shutdown raises questions about the reliability of travel facilitation services during periods of political instability. Frequent travelers are left to wonder how future government actions might affect their travel plans and the services they rely on.

Conclusion

In the wake of the Global Entry suspension, it is crucial for travelers to remain adaptable and informed. Understanding the challenges and preparing for longer wait times can help ease some of the frustrations associated with this situation. As the government works to resolve the shutdown and restore services, travelers can only hope for a swift return to normalcy, allowing them to navigate international borders with the ease they once enjoyed.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning. The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
