Teaching Election 2024 Doesn’t Have to Be Controversial

The 2024 election is approaching, and with it comes the inevitable question: how do we teach about it in a way that is engaging, informative, and avoids unnecessary controversy? The answer lies in focusing on the process, not the partisanship.

Instead of diving into the specific candidates and their platforms, prioritize the fundamentals of democratic elections. Explain the roles of voters, candidates, and institutions like the Electoral College. Engage students in interactive activities like mock debates or designing their own political campaigns. This hands-on approach allows them to explore the process in a tangible way, fostering critical thinking and a deeper understanding of democracy.

Furthermore, emphasize the importance of informed decision-making. Encourage students to research candidates, analyze their positions on key issues, and develop their own informed opinions. By fostering media literacy, students can critically evaluate the information they encounter and discern fact from fiction, promoting a healthy skepticism towards political discourse.

By focusing on the process and empowering students to become informed citizens, we can turn the 2024 election into a valuable learning opportunity. We can guide students towards a nuanced understanding of the democratic system and encourage them to actively participate in shaping their future. This approach not only fosters a respectful classroom environment but also equips students with the critical skills necessary to navigate the complex political landscape of our time.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
