August 1, 2023: College hopefuls, rejoice! The Common Application, the widely used platform for college admissions, has officially launched its 2024-25 application cycle. This means thousands of high school seniors and their families can now start exploring their options and building their college dreams.

This year, the Common App brings with it a few exciting updates aimed at making the application process more user-friendly and accessible:

Streamlined Application Experience: The Common App has refined its interface, making it easier to navigate and complete the application. Key information like deadlines, essays, and recommendations are now more prominently displayed, reducing confusion and making the process less daunting.

Enhanced Accessibility Features: Recognizing the diverse needs of applicants, the Common App has incorporated enhanced accessibility features. This includes improved screen reader compatibility and alternative text formats, ensuring a smoother experience for students with disabilities.

Expanded Financial Aid Options: The Common App continues to play a crucial role in connecting students with financial aid opportunities. The 2024-25 application offers access to a wider range of scholarships and financial aid programs, empowering students from all backgrounds to pursue higher education.

Increased Focus on Holistic Review: The Common App recognizes that college admissions go beyond test scores and GPAs. The application emphasizes a holistic review process, allowing students to showcase their unique talents, experiences, and passions through essays, extracurricular activities, and other optional sections.

Early Action vs. Early Decision: With the application now live, prospective students can strategize their application timeline. Early Action and Early Decision options allow students to receive a decision sooner, potentially influencing their college planning.

Tips for a Successful Application:

Start early: Avoid the last-minute rush! Utilize the early months to research colleges, explore potential programs, and draft compelling essays.

Read the prompts carefully: Understand the essence of each essay prompt and tailor your responses to reflect your unique experiences and aspirations.

Request recommendations from teachers who know you well: Choose recommenders who can provide insightful and positive feedback on your academic abilities and character.

Stay organized: Create a checklist of deadlines, documents, and requirements to avoid missing crucial information.

The Common App is a valuable tool for college hopefuls. By providing a centralized platform for applications, it streamlines the process and allows students to focus on showcasing their strengths and achieving their academic goals. The 2024-25 application cycle is now open, offering a fresh start and a chance to make your college dreams a reality. So, start exploring and make this application journey your own!

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
