I Use Hip-Hop To Teach Middle School History: Here’s How

Hip-hop has become a powerful tool in classrooms, especially when it comes to teaching history to middle school students. By incorporating hip-hop into the curriculum, educators have found a unique way to engage students and make learning fun.

One of the ways I use hip-hop to teach middle school history is by creating catchy rap songs that highlight important historical events and figures. For example, when teaching about the American Revolution, I wrote a rap song that explained the causes, key battles, and outcomes of the war. The students not only enjoyed listening to the song but also found it easier to remember the content through the catchy rhymes and rhythms.

In addition to using rap songs, I also incorporate hip-hop dance and videos into the lessons. By watching hip-hop dance performances related to a specific historical period, students can visually connect with the past and understand the cultural aspects of that era. This immersive approach helps them to visualize history in a more relatable way.

Another method I use is encouraging students to write their own rap songs or create hip-hop dance routines that showcase their understanding of historical events. This not only allows them to express their creativity but also reinforces their learning by engaging multiple intelligences.

Furthermore, hip-hop provides a platform for discussing social issues and historical perspectives. Through analyzing hip-hop lyrics, students can explore the lived experiences of marginalized communities and understand how historical events continue to shape our society today.

In conclusion, harnessing the power of hip-hop has proven to be an effective and engaging way to teach middle school history. By incorporating rap songs, dance, and discussions, students not only learn about historical events but also develop a deeper understanding of the cultural, social, and political aspects of different time periods. Hip-hop truly brings history to life in the classroom.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
