1. Walking Water: Set up three cups in a row, fill the outer cups with water and add different food coloring. Place a paper towel connecting the outer cups and watch the water climb up the paper towel, mixing colors in the center cup.

2. Magic Milk: Pour some milk onto a plate and add drops of different food coloring. Then, dip a cotton swab in dish soap and touch it to the milk. Watch the colors swirl and mix!

3. Balloon Blow-Up: Inflate a balloon by mixing vinegar and baking soda inside a bottle. Pour the vinegar into the bottle and place the balloon on top of the bottle’s opening. Then, add baking soda and watch as the balloon inflates.

4. Static Magic: Rub a balloon on your hair and then hold it near small pieces of paper. Watch as the balloon attracts the paper pieces due to static electricity.

5. Egg Experiment: Place an egg in a cup of vinegar and leave it overnight. The vinegar will dissolve the eggshell, leaving behind a rubbery egg.

6. Sink or Float: Gather various objects, such as a pencil, paperclip, and toy, and predict if they will sink or float in a basin of water. Test each object and record your results.

7. Rainbow Rain: Fill a clear glass with water, place a white paper on top of the glass, and shine a flashlight through the water. See the rainbow colors appear on the paper!

8. Homemade Volcano: Create a volcano using paper mache or playdough. Pour baking soda into the volcano, followed by vinegar, and watch it erupt with fizz and bubbles.

9. Magnetic Exploration: Provide various objects such as paperclips, buttons, and coins, along with a magnet. Explore which objects are magnetic and which are not.

10. Lemon Battery: Insert one copper coin and one zinc-coated nail into a lemon. Use wires to connect the coin and nail to a small lightbulb and observe it light up.

11. Cloud in a Jar: Fill a jar with hot water and place a plate of ice on top. Then, spray hairspray into the jar and watch a cloud form inside.

12. Invisible Ink: Write a secret message using lemon juice or milk. Allow it to dry and reveal the message by holding the paper close to a heat source, such as a light bulb.

13. Oobleck Fun: Mix cornstarch and water to create a non-Newtonian fluid called oobleck. Observe its unique properties by pressing on it and noticing whether it behaves as a solid or liquid.

14. Soda Pop Eruption: Drop Mentos candies into a bottle of soda and quickly step back to observe a fizzy eruption.

15. Solar S’mores: Use a magnifying glass to focus the sun’s rays onto a marshmallow placed on a graham cracker and chocolate. Allow the focused sunlight to heat and melt the marshmallow, then enjoy your solar-powered s’more!

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
