Artificial intelligence (AI) is an area of computer science which deals with the creation of intelligent machines that operate like humans. Some of the activities that artificial intelligence is designed to complete include; speech recognition, asssessment, data collection and analysis, predictive analysis, learning, planning, and problem-solving. In this piece, we will discuss 3 ways that artificial intelligence is boosting personalization in higher education.

1.Administrative tasks have been automated

Before AI, professors spent a lot of time grading homework, assessing essays and evaluating students’ class participation and responses. With artificial intelligence, these tasks are automatically completed giving professors enough time to focus on other tasks, such as personalizing each student learning experience. Thanks to AI the workload in higher education has been reduced.

2.Virtualization of professors with AI

With artificial intelligence, students can be instructed virutally. This means that the student and the professor don’t have to be in the same location for learning to occur; instead they can meet in a virtual environment. The type of learning that I speak of differs from elearning, as the learning environment is managed completely by artificial intelligence.  At times, the professor or students facilitate the learning process by telling AI exactly which actions they would like for it to perform. In this way, artificial intelligence serves as a teachers assistant.

3.Personalization and smart tutors

During the learning process, professors may not always be available when a student needs assistance. When this occurs, students lose valuable learning time, while they wait for a response to their communications or until the professor has finished helping another student. Whether this happens in the classroom or away from school, artificial intelligence can help. Whatever the content, there are applications that can tutor or remediate students. Although it might not be as responsive as an actual professor, the fact that it is available 24/7 makes up for it.
