August has arrived, bringing with it the promise of long summer days and even longer reading sessions. This month, the world of science fiction and fantasy offers an eclectic mix of captivating stories, from pocket universes and rogue AI to morally gray characters and world-altering magic. So grab a comfortable chair, a refreshing beverage, and get ready to dive into these must-read titles.

Pocket Universes and Shifting Realities:

1.”The House in the Cerulean Sea” by T.J. Klune – This heartwarming and whimsical novel follows a social worker assigned to investigate an orphanage on a remote island. He soon discovers that the children are not quite what they seem, and his rigid worldview is challenged by the magic and love surrounding them. Prepare for a heartwarming journey of acceptance and finding joy in unexpected places.

2. “The Atlas Six” by Olivie Blake – Enter a world where magic is a science, and six exceptional young mages are chosen to compete for a coveted spot in the prestigious Atlas Society. This book delves into ambition, power, and the lengths we go to achieve our dreams. Blake’s intricate world-building and intriguing characters will keep you captivated until the final page.

3. “The Ten Thousand Doors of January” by Alix E. Harrow – A captivating blend of fantasy and adventure, this story follows January Scaller, a bookish young woman who discovers a hidden world within the pages of a magical book. With the help of a mysterious and enigmatic guide, she embarks on a journey across multiple worlds, searching for answers and finding her own destiny.

Unconventional Heroes and Morally Gray Characters:

4. “The Galaxy, and the Ground Within” by Becky Chambers – Chambers delivers another heartwarming tale with this exploration of intergalactic community. Focusing on the lives of individuals living on a stationary space station, the book examines themes of belonging, grief, and the complex nature of human connection.

5. “The Last Graduate” by Naomi Novik – Novik takes us back to the world of her critically acclaimed “School for Good and Evil” series with this standalone novel. This time, the focus is on a young woman with a dubious past who finds herself thrust into the heart of the school’s magic, facing challenges that could reshape the balance of good and evil.

6. “A Psalm for the Wild-Built” by Becky Chambers – This novella offers a meditation on technology, the environment, and the meaning of life. A tea monk and a robot embark on a journey of self-discovery and acceptance, challenging traditional notions of purpose and finding beauty in the quiet moments.

Beyond the Horizon:

7. “The Vanishing Half” by Brit Bennett – This captivating novel explores the complexities of race, identity, and family through the lives of Stella and Desiree Vignes, identical twin sisters who choose different paths after escaping their small Louisiana town. Bennett’s lyrical prose and insightful exploration of human relationships makes this a must-read.

8. “Piranesi” by Susanna Clarke – This is a surreal and thought-provoking novel that explores themes of memory, reality, and the nature of consciousness. Piranesi, a man living in a mysterious world of vast halls and tidal seas, unravels a complex web of secrets, questioning the very nature of his existence.

This August, prepare to be swept away by captivating tales, morally gray heroes, and worlds waiting to be explored. Whether you prefer pocket universes or a reflection on the human condition, these books offer something for every reader seeking a journey beyond the everyday. Happy reading!

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
