Introduction:

Engaging in open conversations with kids is crucial when it comes to addressing topics like drinking. By understanding their perspective and providing guidance, we can help shape their attitudes towards alcohol. To facilitate these discussions, we’ve compiled a list of 25 conversation starters to help you find out what your child thinks about drinking.

1. What are your thoughts on people consuming alcohol?

2. Have you ever seen someone drink alcohol? How did it make you feel?

3. How do you think alcohol affects a person’s behavior?

4. When is it appropriate for someone to drink alcohol? When is it not?

5. What are some reasons people might choose to drink alcohol?

6. Have you ever been offered a drink containing alcohol? If so, how did you handle the situation?

7. Do you know what the legal drinking age is in our country? Why do you think there’s a legal age for drinking?

8. What do you think happens when people drink too much alcohol?

9. How does drinking affect the decisions people make?

10. Is it easier or more difficult for someone to say “no” to drinking when their friends are also doing it? Why?

11. Do you think there’s a difference between social drinking and having a drinking problem? Can you explain your thoughts?

12. How can consuming alcohol impact someone’s health in the long term?

13. Do we ever talk about alcohol consumption in our family? If so, do these conversations help or hurt your understanding of its effects on people’s lives?

14. Do any of your favorite movies or TV shows depict characters consuming alcohol? How does this make you feel?

15. Have you talked about alcohol with your friends? What have they mentioned about their opinions or experiences with it?

16. When people celebrate events, sometimes they consume alcohol as part of the festivities. What do you think about that?

17. Why do you think some people choose not to drink alcohol?

18. How can alcohol consumption affect relationships between family members or friends?

19. What advice would you give to your own child about alcohol if you were parent in the future?

20. Do you feel comfortable discussing alcohol-related topics with someone who’s been drinking? Why or why not?

21. In some cultures, moderate alcohol consumption is a part of their traditions. How do these cultural perspectives influence your thoughts on drinking?

22. What role do parents play in guiding kids’ opinions and understanding about alcohol consumption?

23. Have you ever heard of Alcoholics Anonymous or other organizations that help people overcome alcohol addictions? What are your thoughts on their work and importance?

24. If someone comes to you for advice on whether or not they should try alcohol, what would you say to them?

25. In conclusion, what are your personal thoughts on alcohol consumption and its effect on people’s lives around the world?

When having conversations with your child about drinking, remember that it’s important to maintain an open dialogue and listen to their opinions and experiences. By engaging in honest conversations, we can better understand their perspective and help guide their decision-making regarding alcohol consumption in the future.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
