In today’s rapidly evolving world, fostering curiosity and creativity is paramount. STEAM education, encompassing science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics, provides a holistic approach to learning by encouraging hands-on exploration and problem-solving. Thankfully, accessing quality STEAM resources doesn’t have to break the bank. Here are three free platforms that can help ignite the spark of curiosity in students of all ages:

  1. Code.org:

Code.org is a leading platform dedicated to making computer science accessible and engaging. Their Hour of Code initiative offers interactive, self-paced tutorials covering various coding languages and concepts. From crafting simple games to building animations, students can learn computational thinking and problem-solving skills while having fun. The platform is accessible to all age groups, making it an ideal resource for both elementary and high school students.

  1. Khan Academy:

Khan Academy is a treasure trove of educational resources, including a dedicated STEAM section. Their Art & Design courses cover drawing, animation, and digital design techniques, while the Computer Programming section introduces concepts like algorithms and web development. Khan Academy’s comprehensive library of videos, practice exercises, and interactive activities make learning engaging and effective.

  1. PBS Kids:

PBS Kids is a household name for its engaging children’s programming, but it also offers a wealth of free STEAM resources. Their PBS Kids Games website features interactive games and activities that blend learning with fun. From exploring the world of science with “The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That” to building with “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood,” these games cover a wide range of STEAM concepts in a playful and accessible way.

Beyond the Resources:

These three platforms are just the beginning. Many other free resources are available online, from educational YouTube channels to open-source coding projects. The key is to encourage exploration and experimentation. By providing students with access to diverse STEAM resources, we can nurture their curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking skills, preparing them for success in the 21st century.

Here are some tips for integrating these resources into your teaching:

Start small: Introduce one resource at a time and build upon it gradually.

Integrate into existing curriculum: Find ways to connect the resources to your existing lesson plans and learning objectives.

Encourage collaboration: Facilitate group activities and discussions around the resources to foster teamwork and problem-solving skills.

Celebrate creativity: Encourage students to share their projects, ideas, and learning experiences.

By harnessing the power of free STEAM resources, we can empower students to explore, learn, and create, fostering a lifelong love of learning and innovation.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
