Deciding which college to attend can be a daunting task. For many, it will be the most important decision that they make in their lives. To make an informed decision, you have to consider a lot of variables, such as cost of attendance, financial aid, student-teacher ratio, academics, student life, and more. These factors will either positively or negatively impact the quality of education that you receive.

Well, if you are as ambitious as I was in my late teens, then you want to attend a top school, instead of an average or mediocre one. Fortunately, we have already done the legwork for you. To help you find the right school for your interests and goals, we’ve compiled a list of 2022’s best master’s in information technology programs.

- MIT, Cambridge, MA
Massachusetts Institute of Technology has a master’s in information technology with classes that cover concepts such as software and computation for simulation. Admission requires that learners fill out the application form and submit it online. Learners must finish 36 units in the core subjects, 12 units in unrestricted electives, 24 units in the restricted electives, and a thesis.
- University of Washington, Seattle, WA
To be admitted into the master’s in information technology from the University of Washington, learners must apply with their resume, a completed application, transcripts from previously attended schools, and an application fee. The admissions committee accepts learners based on general intellectual talent, their academic achievements and managerial capacity, and their capacity to clearly and persuasively communicate. Learners take classes such as information technology and organizational strategy, operations and business process management, and business data analysis.
- University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, Champaign, IL
Learners who finish the master of computer science take classes in methods, programming languages, and software engineering and artificial intelligence. Classes that constitute the technology aspect of the degree consist of work in architecture, compilers, and parallel computing and database information systems. Learners must finish a total of 32 credits to graduate, with 12 to 16 credits in the core, 12 credits in advanced classes, and the remaining credits in electives.

UC Berkeley has a master’s in information technology that emphasizes information management and systems. The degree program takes two years to finish and constitutes a total of 48 units. Learners take classes that cover concepts such as Python fundamentals, software prototyping, and information law and policy. Most learners finish summer internships that allow them to apply what they learn in class to actual, real-world experiences. Learners also finish final projects in which they design a prototype system or perform substantial research.
A master’s in information technology from the UT at Austin requires the completion of classes in advanced programming, IT and supply chain management, strategic IT and alter management, and user-generated content analytics. To graduate, learners must also finish a capstone project in which they combine all that they learn into a single experience. Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally sanctioned school with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
- Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA
Carnegie Mellon University has three tracks in its master’s in information technology: strategy, privacy engineering, and software engineering. Learners in the privacy engineering path take between 12 and 16 months to finish the degree program, while those on the software engineering path take approximately 12 months to finish the degree program.
Learners in the strategy concentration graduate ready to assess cybersecurity threats and develop management solutions for information systems; learners in this path can select one of four concentrations in data analytics, networked software systems, information security, and politics and strategy. The privacy engineering path caters to learners hoping to become privacy engineers or managers, and the software engineering path caters to learners with less than two years of professional work experience in software engineering.

Admission to the University of Michigan’s masters in information technology requires that learners already have a bachelor’s degree. Learners in the degree program must finish 48 credits required to graduate. This normally takes about two years of full-time study or between three and four years of part-time study. Hopeful graduates must finish either the “mastery course” or a thesis project in their final year of study. Classes consist of intensive Python programming for information learners, information and control, managing organizational information assets, and crisis informatics.

The master’s information technology degree at Georgia Tech is a business administration degree that teaches the intersection of business and tech. Learners take classes on select weekends, with a total of four residencies and two trips abroad. Learners may apply and earn admission into the degree program at any time of the year. The degree program requires a total of 50 credit hours to finish.

Princeton University has a master’s in information technology curriculum through its master of science in computer science. Learners take classes such as introduction to programming systems; networks: friends, money, and bytes; information technology and public policy; and advanced programming methods. Those hoping to get admission to the degree program should note that they can only apply for fall admission.
- University of California at San Diego, San Diego, CA
The master’s in information technology classes at the UC San Diego come through classes in the degree program’s computer science path. International learners must supply their TOEFL scores for admission, and all learners must supply their GRE scores and hold a bachelor’s degree from a sanctioned school. Incoming learners must also have earned a minimum of 3.0 GPA. Hopeful graduates must finish either a thesis or a holistic exam. Learners in the degree program enjoy all of the advantages associated with on-campus learning, including networking with other learners and faculty and the school’s learner support services.

Stanford’s master’s in information technology has a concentration choice in the computer science master’s degree. The information management and analytics concentration deals with the applications side of social media, applying data mining algorithms and methods, networking, bioinformatics, and many other areas. Example classes consist of transaction processing and distributed databases, database systems principles, and advanced concepts in database systems.
- University of California at Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA
UCLA’s master’s in information technology curriculum derives from the master’s in computer science. The school is renowned for its studies in the computer sciences. The most competitive candidates possess a minimum 3.5 grade point average for their undergraduate studies. At a minimum, learners must hold a 3.0 grade point average. Other requirements consist of the submission of GRE scores and either TOEFL or IELTS scores for international learners. To apply, prospective learners should submit three letters of reference, preferably from professors who can attest to the learner’s capacity during their final two years of undergrad.

The master’s in information technology at Purdue has a focus area called “Foundations of Information Security.” Totaling 30 credits, learners can finish the degree in one year of full-time study that includes two summer classes. Learners take foundational classes, core classes, and elective classes. They study concepts such as social, economic, and legal aspects of security; data security and privacy; software security; and security analytics.

The master’s in information technology from Cornell can be taken through the school’s interdisciplinary professional information science degree program. Learners can develop a course of study expected of someone with a degree in information technology. Coursework includes studies in concepts such as the structure of information networks; information, technology, and society; interactive information visualizations; and language and information. Before graduating, learners must finish a capstone project.

Columbia University has a master’s in information technology-level curriculum through its master of science in technology management degree program. Learners must finish a total of 36 credit hours to graduate, and they may finish the degree program on either a part-time or a full-time basis. Full-time learners normally finish the degree program in three terms, and part-time learners normally finish the degree program in two years. The school only grants admission to learners in the fall, so candidates should keep that in mind while gathering materials. Learners take core classes and electives in studies such as technology in the business environment, accounting, and finance for technology, operations management, and analytics for technology management.
