Congratulations! If you represent a college or university that is included in this list, please collect your seal below.

The official seal of the American Historical Association.

Deciding which college to attend can be a daunting task. For many, it will be the most important decision that they make in their lives. To make an informed decision, you have to consider a lot of variables, such as cost of attendance, financial aid, student/teacher ratio, academics, student life, and more. These factors will either positively or negatively impact the quality of education that you receive.

Do you want to acquire a doctorate in history, but don’t know what institution you should attend? Well, if you are as ambitious as I was in my late teens, then you want to attend a top school, instead of an average or mediocre one. Fortunately, we have already done the legwork for you. To help you find the right school for your interests and goals, we’ve compiled a list of 2022’s best doctorate in history programs.

What institution did we forget? Leave your thoughts in the comment section below.

  1. University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC

Doctoral candidates to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with an MA from another school must have their thesis reviewed and accepted before admission to the PhD degree program.

The history department’s PhD degree program conducts research in subjects such as ancient history, women’s history, military history, international history, and US history. A research dissertation is required to finish the degree program, and candidates must demonstrate either a minimal proficiency in two foreign languages or advanced proficiency in one foreign language.

  1. Brown University, Providence, RI

Brown University usually only grants admission to 10 to 12 PhD learners each year. The mission of the institution’s doctoral degree program in history is to train candidates to be teachers and researchers. Therefore, learners are required to be teaching assistants during the 5- to 7-year duration of the degree program. Doctoral candidates select one major and two minor fields of interest. Learners must also finish a dissertation and a foreign language requirement according to their major area of research. A dual PhD degree program in ancient history is also offered by the history and classics departments.

  1. Harvard University, Cambridge, MA

Harvard University has a dual PhD in history/juris doctor (JD) degree program. Harvard’s history department has a PhD degree program that aims to produce skilled scholars and teachers via intensive classwork with faculty and advisors, along with teaching fellowships and a dissertation. The degree program takes about seven years to finish and offers learners access to over 80 libraries, several research centers, and conferences. The school’s dual PhD/JD degree program is offered through the Harvard Law School.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
