Introduction: Engaging Students in Advisory Periods

Advisory periods in middle schools provide a unique opportunity to foster relationships, promote student well-being, and enhance social and emotional learning. These periods are designed to create a supportive environment where students can engage with peers and trusted adults. To make the most of advisory time, educators can implement various fun and interactive activities that encourage participation, teamwork, and self-discovery. In this article, we will explore twenty engaging advisory activities tailored for middle school students, providing a mix of fun, learning, and personal growth.

Icebreaker Games: Building Connections Among Students

Icebreaker games are essential for helping students feel comfortable and connected in an advisory setting. These activities can break down barriers and encourage communication.

Two Truths and a Lie: Each student shares two true statements and one false statement about themselves. The group then guesses which statement is the lie.

Human Bingo: Create bingo cards with various traits or experiences (e.g., “has traveled to another country,” “plays a musical instrument”). Students mingle to find peers matching each square.

The Name Game: Students introduce themselves with an adjective that starts with the same letter as their name (e.g., “Joyful Jessica”). This activity helps students remember each other’s names while being creative.

Team Building Activities: Fostering Collaboration and Trust

Team-building activities are excellent for enhancing cooperation and trust among students. These activities encourage collaboration and problem-solving.

The Marshmallow Challenge: In small groups, students must build the tallest freestanding structure using spaghetti, tape, string, and a marshmallow. This activity promotes teamwork and strategic thinking.

Escape Room Challenge: Create a simple escape room scenario where students must solve puzzles and find clues within a time limit. This fosters critical thinking and collaboration.

Group Juggle: Students stand in a circle and throw a ball to each other, calling out the name of the person they are throwing to. Gradually, introduce more balls to increase the challenge, promoting teamwork and communication.

Creative Expression Activities: Encouraging Self-Expression

Creative expression activities allow students to showcase their talents and explore their interests in a fun way.

Art Collage: Provide magazines, scissors, and glue for students to create a collage representing their interests and aspirations. This can lead to discussions about goals and dreams.

Creative Writing Prompts: Give students fun prompts such as “If I could have any superpower…” or “Describe your dream vacation.” Allow them to share their stories, fostering creativity and self-expression.

Talent Show: Organize a talent show where students can perform in front of their peers. This not only boosts confidence but also celebrates individual talents.

Mindfulness and Relaxation Activities: Promoting Mental Well-Being

Incorporating mindfulness and relaxation techniques into advisory can help students manage stress and enhance their focus.

Guided Meditation: Lead a short, guided meditation session to help students relax and focus. This can be done using calming music or nature sounds.

Gratitude Journaling: Encourage students to write down three things they are grateful for each week. This practice can improve their mindset and promote positivity.

Breathing Exercises: Teach students simple breathing techniques to help them manage anxiety and stress. Practicing these techniques can enhance their overall well-being.

Community Service Projects: Instilling a Sense of Responsibility

Engaging in community service projects helps students develop empathy and a sense of responsibility toward their community.

Food Drive: Organize a food drive where students collect non-perishable food items to donate to local shelters. This teaches them about giving back and the importance of helping others.

Park Clean-Up: Plan a day for students to clean up a local park. This activity promotes teamwork and environmental responsibility.

Fundraising for a Cause: Students can choose a cause they care about and organize a fundraiser to support it. This teaches them about social responsibility and the impact they can have.

Skill-Building Workshops: Fostering Personal Development

Skill-building workshops can equip students with valuable life skills while keeping them engaged in advisory.

Cooking Class: Organize a simple cooking or baking session where students can learn to make a healthy snack. This promotes nutrition and culinary skills.

Public Speaking Workshop: Help students develop their public speaking skills through fun activities like storytelling or impromptu speeches. This builds confidence and communication abilities.

Financial Literacy Basics: Teach students about budgeting and saving through interactive activities, such as creating a mock budget for a small project. This skill is essential for their future independence.

Cultural Awareness Activities: Promoting Diversity and Inclusion

Activities focusing on cultural awareness enhance students’ understanding of diversity and foster inclusive environments.

Cultural Fair: Host a cultural fair where students present information about their heritage, including traditional food, music, and customs. This promotes respect and appreciation for differences.

Language Exchange: Pair students who speak different languages and encourage them to teach each other common phrases. This activity fosters communication and cultural exchange.

Global Pen Pals: Establish a pen pal program with students from another country. This allows students to learn about different cultures and perspectives.

Reflection and Goal-Setting Activities: Encouraging Personal Growth

Encouraging reflection and goal-setting helps students take ownership of their learning and personal development.

Vision Board Creation: Students create vision boards that represent their goals and aspirations. This visual representation can motivate them to work toward their dreams.

Weekly Reflection Journals: Encourage students to maintain journals where they can reflect on their week, focusing on successes and areas for improvement. This practice promotes self-awareness.

Goal-Setting Workshops: Guide students in setting short-term and long-term goals, helping them develop actionable steps to achieve those goals. This encourages accountability and motivation.

Conclusion: The Impact of Engaging Advisory Activities

Implementing fun advisory activities can significantly enhance the middle school experience for students. By fostering connections, promoting teamwork, encouraging self-expression, and instilling a sense of responsibility, educators can create a supportive and engaging environment. These activities not only help students develop essential life skills but also contribute to their overall well-being and personal growth. As schools continue to prioritize social and emotional learning, the incorporation of such advisory activities will play a crucial role in shaping well-rounded, confident, and responsible young individuals.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
