Los Angeles, California, is renowned for its stunning beaches, each offering a unique experience that reflects the vibrant culture and natural beauty of the region. With miles of coastline stretching along the Pacific Ocean, LA boasts a variety of public beach spots that cater to sunbathers, surfers, families, and adventurers alike. Whether you're looking for a lively atmosphere or a serene escape, this article explores the 17 best beaches in Los Angeles, highlighting what makes each one a must-visit destination.

Santa Monica Beach: Iconic California Charm

Santa Monica Beach is one of the most famous beaches in Los Angeles, attracting visitors with its picturesque pier and vibrant beachfront. The beach features soft sand, a lively boardwalk, and numerous amenities, including volleyball courts, playgrounds, and bike rentals. The adjacent Santa Monica Pier offers attractions like an amusement park, restaurants, and stunning ocean views, making it a perfect spot for families and couples alike.

Venice Beach: The Eccentric Spirit of LA

Venice Beach is known for its eclectic atmosphere, vibrant street performers, and unique shops along the boardwalk. This beach is a cultural hub, where visitors can experience the artistic vibe of the area, from muscle beach gym enthusiasts to local artists displaying their work. The Venice Skate Park, located right on the sand, adds to the beach's character, making it a great spot for both spectators and skaters.

Malibu Beach: Scenic Beauty and Celebrity Sightings

Malibu Beach is synonymous with luxury and stunning coastal views. This beach features beautiful sandy stretches and clear blue waters, perfect for sunbathing and swimming. Malibu is also home to some celebrity residences, making it an excellent spot for those hoping to catch a glimpse of Hollywood's elite. With nearby attractions like the Malibu Pier and the Getty Villa, visitors can enjoy both relaxation and cultural enrichment.

El Matador Beach: A Hidden Gem

El Matador Beach is one of the lesser-known treasures of Los Angeles, offering breathtaking views and a more secluded atmosphere. Nestled between rocky cliffs, this beach is perfect for those seeking a quiet escape. The stunning sea caves and giant boulders provide excellent opportunities for photography and exploration. However, visitors should note that access to the beach requires a short hike down a steep path.

Manhattan Beach: Family-Friendly Fun

The beach features a long, sandy shoreline and a picturesque pier that is perfect for leisurely strolls. The nearby downtown area boasts numerous restaurants and shops, making it an ideal spot for a full day of fun with the family. There are also playgrounds and picnic areas for those looking to relax and enjoy a meal by the ocean.

Dockweiler State Beach: Beach Bonfire Bliss

Zuma Beach is one of the largest and most popular beaches in Malibu, known for its spacious sandy areas and ample parking. This beach is ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and picnicking, making it a favorite among families. The well-maintained facilities, including lifeguard stations and restrooms, enhance the beach experience. Zuma Beach is also known for its scenic beauty, with stunning views of the surrounding cliffs and ocean.

Will Rogers State Beach: A Relaxing Retreat

Will Rogers State Beach is a serene spot located near the Pacific Palisades. This beach offers a more relaxed atmosphere compared to some of the busier beaches in Los Angeles. With its tranquil waters and scenic views, it's an excellent location for swimming and sunbathing. The beach features picnic areas, making it a great place for families to enjoy a day outdoors.

Point Dume State Beach: Nature's Beauty and Hiking Trails

Point Dume State Beach is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and hiking opportunities. This beach features dramatic cliffs, expansive ocean views, and secluded coves. Visitors can explore the hiking trails that lead to the top of the bluffs for panoramic views of the coastline. The beach is also a great spot for whale watching during migration seasons, making it a unique outdoor experience.

Leo Carrillo State Park: A Nature Lover's Paradise

Leo Carrillo State Park offers a mix of beach and wilderness, making it perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. This beach features tide pools, sea caves, and natural arches, providing opportunities for exploration and adventure. The park is also home to several hiking trails that wind through coastal canyons and hills, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the diverse ecosystems of the area.

Redondo Beach: A Vibrant Waterfront

Redondo Beach is famous for its lively waterfront and beautiful beach. The Redondo Beach Pier offers dining, shopping, and entertainment options, making it a great spot for a day out. The beach itself features volleyball courts and ample space for sunbathing and swimming. Families can enjoy the nearby parks and playgrounds, making it a well-rounded destination for all ages.

La Merced Beach: A Quaint Escape

Visitors can enjoy a peaceful day by the ocean, with plenty of space for beach games and relaxation. The surrounding area is also home to beautiful coastal trails, perfect for a leisurely hike.

Santa Monica State Beach: A Historical Landmark

Santa Monica State Beach is not only a popular beach destination but also a historical landmark. The beach features the iconic Santa Monica Pier, which has been a symbol of California beach culture for decades. Visitors can enjoy the amusement park rides, restaurants, and scenic views of the ocean. The beach itself offers ample space for sunbathing, swimming, and beach volleyball, making it a versatile spot for beachgoers.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
