Engaging children in the world around them is essential for their cognitive and sensory development. By using activities that involve the five senses, kids can explore and learn about their environment in a fun and interactive way. Here are 16 exciting and educational activities that will help children enhance their sensory perception:

1. Sight: Take a nature walk and encourage children to observe different colors, shapes, and patterns in nature. Ask them to spot objects of various sizes or search for specific shapes like circles or triangles.

2. Hearing: Organize a sound scavenger hunt where kids listen for specific sounds in their surroundings. They can search for sounds such as birds chirping, cars passing by, or leaves rustling in the wind.

3. Smell: Set up a smelling station with various scented objects like flowers, fruits, spices, or essential oils. Blindfold the children and have them try to identify each scent.

4. Taste: Arrange a taste testing activity using different types of fruits, vegetables, or snacks. Children can explore tastes like sweet, sour, salty, and bitter, and identify their preferences.

5. Touch: Create a sensory bin filled with textured materials such as rice, sand, or water beads. Children can explore and describe how each material feels to touch.

6. Sight: Play “I Spy” with children, asking them to find objects of specific colors or shapes in their environment.

7. Hearing: Have a sound discrimination activity where children listen to a variety of sounds and guess what is making each sound.

8. Smell: Set up a blindfolded smelling challenge where children have to identify different scents without using their sense of sight.

9. Taste: Introduce children to a variety of international cuisines and let them taste dishes from different cultures.

10. Touch: Create a sensory path outdoors with different textures such as grass, sand, or pebbles. Let children walk barefoot and experience the different sensations under their feet.

11. Sight: Get children involved in arts and crafts activities that require them to use their visual perception, such as painting, drawing, or collage-making.

12. Hearing: Create a homemade musical instrument using household objects, and let children experiment with different sounds they can produce.

13. Smell: Encourage children to create their own scented playdough using natural ingredients like herbs, spices, or extracts.

14. Taste: Have a blindfolded taste-testing challenge where children have to identify different flavors of chips, candies, or fruits.

15. Touch: Set up a sensory table with various materials like sand, water, foam, or slime, and let children explore and manipulate the textures.

16. Sight: Plan a trip to a local museum or art gallery where children can engage their visual senses by observing and appreciating various artworks and exhibits.

These activities will not only entertain children but also stimulate their senses, promote their cognitive development, and encourage a deeper connection with the world around them. Have fun exploring and learning together!

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
